  • Fuel Leak

I have read past threads on the subject and I think I know what to look for but just wanted some thoughts as I am not the most mechanical when it comes to this stuff. It started a while back when after a long trip on the XJ1100 It was leaking into the airbox even with the petcocks tuned off. This subsided after a bit and I assumed it was a stuck float in the carb. After running a tank with Seafoam added to gas to try and clean out the carbs that seemed to take care of the issue. Forward a few months and the leaking is back as I am attempting to winterize the beast. I normally top off the tank and run stabilizer through as I have in the past with no issues. This time i notice fuel spurting out from underneath the motor and becomes more intense as I throttle up higher.

Would the best order of checking be to start with the petcocks and possibly get a rebuild kit for them. Then look at the fuel lines for leaks and finally consider a carb cleaning. Am I missing anything here or am I on the correct track?

    Thanks

    Brazz,

You're on the right track. It could be as simple as dirt in the petcock or like mine, a torn disc. Rebuild kits are easy to find and easy to insall as well. Even though I have rebuilt mine I find there is a definite sweet spot where the fuel is totally shut off. You may want to disconnect both fuel lines and see where that is, it may not be exactly where the lever is pointed dead on off!

    Cheers,

      You have leaking petcock(s).

If you've got fuel spurting out as you rev the motor, you have additional problems. Exactly where does it squirt from?

The XJ has an octopus also, check it for a bad diaphram.
