  • XJ stuck in gear, clutch in = no forward

Was riding my XJ with 1980 XS engine when suddenly oops!

    When: Sat. 11/10/07

For a week I'd heard a bit of ringing noise as each gear engaged (as the bike slowed). I've been riding it easy, clutching out carefully.

At first I thought it was a noise coming from under the tank ... IT'S ONLY HEARD IN GEAR, SLOWING DOWN.

    1:00 pm Breakdown
About 30 mph I downshifted on level ground. Today's downshift engagement (a mid-pitched growl) grew louder as I slowed. Pulled the clutch in and shut it down before any more noise or damage could result.

3 pm Bike would not roll forward in either nuetral or in any gear, even with the clutch pulled in.

Got home, took clutch adjust cover off - checked cable & engangement travel, it looks normal. Still no forward - we had to push the bike Backwards to load it onto a trailer.

Searched forum tech articles & gear discussions - not much found about this PARTICULAR TRBL. Until today the bike had been starting & running well with no other funny noises.

Lost primary chain? Broken clutch? Seized engine? Anyone have any ideas?

    Siezed middle drive.

When was the last time you checked the fluid level in there?

Sounds like it's stuck in reverse

Hadn't checked middle drive. Hope that's all it is ... As if that weren't bad enough. Er, Now where did I put that XJ shop manual?

Engine should run ok even if middle gear FUBAR'ed,
at least in neutral or with clutch pulled.

              Hey MRO,

He didn't say that the engine wouldn't run, but that it wouldn't ROLL. I also seem to remember being able to push it backwards vs. forwards might also be the rear brake trying to lock up, so he might want to pop the bleed screw on the rear caliper just to make sure that the brake isn't dragging severely!?

But it does sound more like the middle drive, whining noise from under the gastank!

At least, after getting a replacement drive, you could then play with the old one IF you ever thought about a ChainDrive conversion!

                .... WHOLE LOTTA LUBE

Yep - It WAS indeed the center gearbox. It's 100% toasted.

                1) PO had swapped motors/drives, didn't torque center box's bolts tight enough (they were LOOSE).

                2) Apparently he'd re-used the old gasket - lube was leaking out ... fluid looked like engine oil drips below. Both bearings were dry, shafts turned gray etc. Lucky I stopped before it could lock up the bike at speed.

                3) GEARBOX is frozen unless rotation is reversed. Sounds crunchy. Trashed, zip, gone ....

Yes ... I shoulda checked the lube level.
Upon inspection & reflection I think the gearbox was already going out when I bought bike - it was noisy from day one.

So now I'm XSively seeking a gearbox / gasket etc....
