  • Doesn't drop back to idle right away...???

Ok...synch'd the carbs in prep for the Syracuse meet n greet, and suddenly, the bike wont drop back to idle right away. Instead, it seems to hang at high r's for a few secs, then drops back to idle.

All the mix screws are set at 1 1/2 out, all carbs are synch'd damn near perfectly. Thought it might be a sticky throttle issue, but no, it isnt. Any ideas?

Check for a vacuum leak. Probably with your 25 year old vacuum port caps from when you synch'ed her.

I replaced the caps last month with brandy-new ones, but will check for leaks anyhow...Thanks man.

I had a similiar problem last weekend when I synced mine, turned out I wasn't synced at all, one of the butterflies (Carb #4) was closing sooner than the rest causing the idle to hang up. Sometimes a blip of the throttle would bring down, sometimes not. I didn't find the problem until I removed he carbs and could visually see what was happening.

        Hope this helps,

          Paul,

          How'd you fix it? Pre-synch?

Yes, the wire twist tie method.!

            Worked very well too.

I had the same problem, and it was the throttle cable. It had started breaking up at the throttle grip.

It broke a couple days later.
Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

You may want to try turning down your fast idle screw - just a tad - your adjustments may have resulted in a very slight increase on the 'rich' side.

I've had this happen a couple of times, the last after a mechanic adjusted the carbs for me.

                  Hi Hammerhead,

Still sounds like a synch problem....... What did you use to synch 'em?
I have had problems with almost every set of "Gauge-type" balancers I have tried........... If you use "gauges", try swapping 'em onto different cylinders after you have finished; The results can be quite illuminating!

If the throttle cable is not sticking and adjusted properly then check for smooth operation of the butterfly valves and if their good then you most likely have a air leak to find and plug.
