Valve checking !!

Morning people,
and what a fantastic morning it is in London...Not Rain,wind cold blah blah blah

any way, i have tried looking for a guide on checking the valve clearances, could any one point me in the right direction

Valve clearances are

Intake - 0.010mm~0.040mm. Maximum 0.10mm.
Exhaust - 0.025mm~0.055mm. Maximum 0.12mm.

Just in case anyone else needs them.

Direct from the good book (factory manual)
spec's for 78' & 79'

Intake - 0.16mm~ 0.20mm.
Exhaust - 0.21mm~0.25mm

remove tank
remove balist resister
remove valve cover

With pointy part of cam (lobe) perpendicular to cam bucket/shim
insert feeler gauge between cam lobe and shim.
ckeck em all, write down clearances.
Ones that need adjustment, need to remove that shim and see what number printed on it to deturmin correct size replacement shim. Some times can use a shim from from another one thats out a spec...
No shim tool?...... remove cams.
Some where here on the site is a chart for shim size replacement, and detailed discriptions in tech tips or do a search as it's been discussed in detail.

hardest part checking valves is getting the old gasket off top of head.

Holy Crap Dan!! LMAO!! You just pulling numbers out of the air? I hope you didn't do these adjustments to YOUR bike! lol. Maybe put on the reading glasses next time before copying from the book?

P.S. Maybe the XS is different... but I've never removed the ballast resistor on mine. Is it that much in the way on the XS?

Good book, better book

Nope, those numbers came out of the '79 supplement, you know, printed after the manual to correct any errors in the original, so those numbers are correct unless Yamaha in wrong.

OK.. lol. I'll let someone who knows a whole lot more than me about it say anything more. I've just never seen those kind of numbers for the valves.....Sure ya didn't grab the Chevy book by accident??

ballast resister hangs down on left side near front of valve cover.
Just easier to un-screw it and stuff it up in the frame on the XSes when pulling the cover out.
