Will the front and rear tire off a 1982 Yamaha XJ1100 Maxim fit a 80 xs11 special? If so can i use my same disk brake parts?

    Thanks
    Jason

Front tire/rim is a direct swap, no issues.

Rear tire/ rim is also a direct swap, however you will need to re-ues the '80 rear rotor. My understanding is that the XJ rear rotor has a different offset than the '80, so your caliper will not align correctly using the XJ rotor. Other than that the tire/rim should go right in.

My question is: Are the XJ rims aluminum (magenesium)?

If they are they should be considerably lighter than the iron ones on the XS?

The rims on the XS' are aluminum, they are very heavy as there is a lot of aluminum in them but they are cast aluminum. The ones on the XJ's if I'm not mistaken are also cast aluminum and are very close in weight. The only difference is the swirled look of them over the straight spoke look.

My xs rims say 'Malleable iron' on them. And they are heavier than any aluminum rims I have had on other bikes...

Heck, even the Harley shop that put my tires on were amazed by the weight of the XS rims.

They are made of alum, I send lots of stuff to the scrap yard and have always gotten clean alum price for the rims from the xs1100. andreas

                        Hey,

Maybe "Malleable Iron" was what was in the Japanese-English translation book for the word for Aluminum?

I'm amazed at how heavy good dense aluminum really is!

                          Hi Guys,

As far as I know, the logo on early Yamaha rims is 'cos the rims were cast by the "Malleable Iron Foundry Company"....... who started off in iron, but also worked in other materials........

Well, you will have to explain why they are heavier than aluminum could be, in a rim that size.

Even the old timer Harley guys were amazed how heavy the XS rims are.

I've also heard that these wheels are unusually strong, for aluminum. People have reported hitting curbs, and other obstacles, to the point where they were amazed that the rims survived without bending.

Perhaps they have an aluminum shell over top an inner wheel type setup.

Wondering if anyone here has ever actually broke one, or cut one apart.

                              Hi Crazcnuk,

If there is any Iron in those wheels, they should be magnetic; .......Mine aren't!
