'78 and '79 standard are the same covers. I've gone from one to the other on Daily Ride.

Some differences, some have a slot, some have a hole, and some have both and the spacing of the slot or hole can be different too.
Only a few will interchange. Some where on my other computer I started a list of the differences between models and years. Bunch a things are different year to year etc., but not as many as I've found on Hondas.

          Not covers but covers?

          Hi Ross,
until I saw MRO's post I thought you meant the cast aluminum engine side covers not the plastic body side covers.
Anyhow, they ain't all identical but if you can't locate the exact proper side cover most orphan side covers can be made to fit with careful use of a Dremel tool to make slots where holes should be and vice-versa.
My '80 Special has a right-side panel off (I believe) a '79 Standard. I had to make a hole and a keyhole where the slots were to make it fit at the top but the plastic knobby thing at the bottom is the same. The panel's shape is not quite the same as the stock left-side panel but nobody can see both sides at once, right?

            I stand corrected

I was thinking engine covers, not body covers (panels)
But I thought the body interchanged TOO....

thats wht I get for thinking
