Hmm...according to that...the exposed wire I have is the ballast bypass input from solenoid. I assumed it did not matter since it ran fine without it before but....im open for anything at this moment.80XS11G (heavily modified) "Snot Rokkit"

Thanks for all the tips and suggestions. I guess I will just give it another shot tomorrow... Yes its a damn shame I cant borrow a TCI from anyone to see if thats my problem. Or some coils. Ive never seen another XS1100 in my area.80XS11G (heavily modified) "Snot Rokkit"

Getting closer
Well . If you passed Randy's test (movie) the problem is between the coils and the TCI(which is ok) . Rare for two colis to go at once so ... I'm betting on something common to them . Maybe a break in the red/white wire between the TCI and the coils . Check for voltage(key on) on this wire at the ign coil plugs .One is orange wire and red/white wire and the other coil plug is grey wire and red/white wire . I'm willing to bet something is wrong with this wire , Once again I dont have an XS so there may be other things that I havent ran into (ballast resistor).
Good luckXJ1100K

roach,
I think you hit it. The ballast bypass is needed. When cranking, this wire bypasses the ballast resistor, giving the coils full 12V. It does that because during cranking the starter draws a lot of current, enough to drop the battery voltage too low to work the TCI.
Also you wrote that you moved the TCI around and got spark breifly. That tells me that you may have a bad connection at the main (large) TCI plug. One of your harness wires inside the connector body may be loose from it's connector or the wire is corroded.
You can pull the connectors out of the plug, ONE AT A TIME, by inserting a small pick to relieve the locking clip. Look down into the business end of the plug and you'll see the locking clip. Before re-inserting the connector, re-bend the clip so the connector will lock again.

(Strange Dr. Frankenstien voice) ITS ALIVE!!!! It was the plug connection where the pickup coil wires plug into the wires that in turn plug into the TCI. Pulled each wire out individually and sanded them with a Dremel. Plugged it back in and BAM. Shocked me good! Was a hell of a feeling to finally get it figured out! Thanks to everyone for the help. Glad I didnt have to buy anything. Thanks again fellas!80XS11G (heavily modified) "Snot Rokkit"
