  • motor swap out

Will a motor out of a 1978 Yamaha XS 1100 fit a 1980 xs1100 special? Kinda dumb question but with these bikes you never know.

The engine will swap just fine. But depending on what you want, you may need to swap the timing plate assembly from the 80 onto the 78 engine, or just keep the 78's since it's more tunable than the 80's! Also, you can use your 80 carbs, or IF you got carbs with the engine, you can use the 78's, again a bit more tunable. The 78 has hotter cams, and slightly more comp. ratio than the 80, so you should get more oomph from it!

      TCI

Use the 78's TCI box or a 79's will work as well.......

The TCI from an 80 model will work also. It is a 2H7 part number, lust like the 78-79.

thanks for the info, I have a lead on a really nice and clean motor with only 20,000 for only 400.00.
