A New Project to Set Me Back!

Hey there folks,

I guess I'm a glutton for punishment! Since I've conquered the SOFCA in it's basic design....we won't go into another possible project in that line for a while yet!
( Remote filter/cooler plates for folks with too close exhausts!)

But...another item I'm thinking of trying to make are handlebar setbacks/risers, since some folks are wanting to lower their front ends and hit the bars when raising the tubes up, and could use some AFFORDABLE set backs with either 1" or 2" rise on them!?
Here are some simple plans for both designs:



Okay, just throwing this out there for any possible responses of folks that would be interested in some at a considerably better price than the $100.00 that I've seen on the NET!?

How well would this work if one wanted to simply pull the bars back a bit for more relaxed stance while riding? I like to sit mid-seat, keeps things airy and they dont bump on the tank

If they would bump the bars back a few inches without changing much else I'd love to see a pic...

You want to watch out for tiller steer with set-backs it can be a problem. I run 2 in. risers and with the angle of the stock clamp base it also sets the bars back without creating that problem.

Hey TC, have you thought about how you are going to make the radius on the bottom? If it were me, and your not I would eliminate it. You could make a half round and bolt on.

Hey Bandit,

Surprisingly the half round is mostly a space taker, it actually doesn't make contact with the recess in the TT on the set that I have. Most of the support is thru the flat surface contacts where the bolts go thru! But, yeah, they may not look quite a pristine as these, but I didn't want to have to go drilling and tapping any more holes than I have to, and wanted that area to be as thick as possible for strength. I've got a rotary table so I can cut nice arcs, but still have to work out the layout and steps I'll need to get them "CLOSE"!

Wa407mpp, yeah, these are not Xsively positioned back away from the OEM position, so with either the 1" or 2" rise, they should be easy to control without radically affecting the handling. I'm actually running a set of the 2" up ones on mine, and can maneuver the twisties just fine!

Yes HamJam, that's sorta where I was getting the ideas from. I'm not trying to go NATIONAL or anything, just that it irks me at the prices these folks are charging for them, and many of us Xsives are not deep pocketed YUPPEES and so I'm just trying to provide a decent equivalent at a fair price. Although I haven't actually tried to make them YET, and I "may" change my mind depending on how HARD they are to make, so let's hope!

I've really never seen these "set backs" before.
Well, I have...
The full dresser '78 that I gave to Sluggo had them...
I had Davestrike over here today, did his fork seals and steering bearings on his '78... he had them, too.(Full dresser)
Were these things standard issue with fairings?(dressers)
Dave's didn't have those half-moon things, and I don't recall whether Sluggo's had them.
I'd like to find a set... found them rather comfortable.

I would just find a stock set and copy the design. Less mental work that way.

It'd be easier to have a half-circle cut-out at the bottom instead of a half-round bulge that'd take another operation to cut the corners square on.
The purchaser can supply his own short length of handlebar or other Ø7/8" thing to align the setbacks, right?
Lifting the fork tubes up through the tripletrees makes the steering lighter. Too much steering lightness can be scary.
I'd help us sidecar freaks though, gimmie a quote?

Renegade wants to put Harley bars on his XS? Bad Renegade.
OTOH If he wants them for a Harley, unless he pays full whack for them at a Harley shop and they say "H-D approved accessory" on them they won't work right and will invalidate the bike's warranty. Just like using a Walmart battery charger rather than the H-D approved one.

Any progress with risers? I'll probably be going for the MCL ones that I earlier posted a link to, but would certainly wait for yours if they may be in your future.
