I was out riding like usual and suddenly my bike was like a lawn mower or a honda 90 . No power . Seemed out of time or something . Not missing but not riight . I could barely coax it home. Once it slammed back to life but only for a second . I unplugged the TCI but no luck . Sound familiar ?

Total guess from a newbie, but could this be the infamous coil pick up wire problem? Or have you already looked at that?

Hate to ask, but how's the fuel level? Vent in the gas cap?

If it's not missing, then it may not be the ignition system. I don't know what you thought you would gain by disconnecting the TCI??

The XJ has both advance curves built into it's programming in the TCI, just uses a vacuum sensor box to signal the TCI. How's your vacuum lines? A lot more info is needed for further diagnostic steps!

            Aha,

If the gas is spilling out the carbs, then you have a stuck float, and are flooding a cylinder or two=your low power in low rpms!

Fix the floats, and it should be fine!

              not the carbs

Sorry , the gas was spilling out the tank cap vent . I havent checked the vac lines yet . I unplugged the TCI and cleaned the connections a bit then plugged it back in .
Did you get the patch funds ?

I guess I'm gearing up to check for the pickup wire problem . There is a nice explanation of it .

                  vac lines

Do you know off hand what size the vac lines are . There is a mess of them and the PO covered them with steel braid with clamps . If I'm going to check I may as well replace .

The vacuum lines are 3/16 inch, and the fuel lines are 1/4 inch.

                      Friggen octupus

Thanks . I've been reading that they are no pickup coil wires on a XJ ? The vac line to the boost sensor sounds exactly like my problem as described by Jerry

                      http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread...il+pickup+wire

About half way down .I dont idle very well but it will idle and run and I did limp it home so I'm hoping its this . I guess there are fuel lines on the oct and tank and carbs . Are they easy to tell apart ? Should I replace them ?What size might they be ? Thanks

Axle, John told you the size, 3/16" for vacuum and 1/4" for fuel. Try to get some of the old style VW fuel line, if you can find it. It has a thin wall, so it fits under the tank easier.

                          Hey Axel,

Also, don't try to cheat and use thin vacuum lines for fuel lines, different material, they harden/crack with fuel in them, not a good thing!

The PO put some nice dress up touches on it with the steel braid, but a PITA to inspect the lines, you'll probably find some cracked or hardened, and probably leaking! The XJ does have pickup coils and wires, BUT they don't constantly flex, the timing plate is still, so that's why it's rare for the PU coil wires to be a problem with the XJ, although folks have reported the PU Coils themselves having gone bad!? Hope it's just your lines! There's a diagram in the tech tips about the routing of the Octopus, same for specials and XJ's!

Check the pickup coil wires, and also look at the TCI box. Randy has a tip on his site about resoldering the leads in the box. That may be all you need to do??
