    Gurus, need your help! Carb Related

    Not your typical carb problem, here goes....

    I am in the process of rebuilding my carbs on my 1100 Special, and the unthinkable has happened. Airscrew on Carb 1 was seized.

    Long story short, I need to re-tap the thread. Any idea what size tap I would need? and most importantly, who would stock it?

      You will want to specify whether it is a pilot screw (fuel control), or a pilot air jet, or something else...

          Sorry, my bad..

          It is the Air mixture screw that sits on the top of the carb, after the butterfly.

              Small taps are hard to find in this neck of the woods but if you have a location that can supply small taps take one of the undamaged screws from one of the other carbs with you and have them match it up to the right tap. They will or should address ...DIA, it's metric and thread pitch. Maybe some other stuff as well when selecting the tap you need.

                  Went down to the local Fastenal store during lunch and ordered a tap. For the record, it is 6mm, 0.5 thread.

                      You'll see that there is a hole that delivers fuel that is horizontal, down there in that bore. You won't want to be going that far with the drilling/helicore. I think there is a pressed-in ball to plug the spot where that hole was made in the manufacturing process.

                          Also do not allow the very fine hole at the bottom of that passage to get damaged in any way or your effort will be all for not. When your running that tap into that hole use great care so you do not fracture the carb body. If you have not used taps before they are turned in and out as they load up. It's a judgment call as to when to back off and restart the tap during the process. Alloy is soft but can also be fragile. You don't just screw them in. An appropriate lube is also a good idea while carrying out the taping operation.
