That is true! Renegade, you can temporarily bypass the resistor by merely pulling the plug and jumping the harness side wires together, and try starting it! IF it starts and stays running, then the ballast resistor is bad, or bad connections. You can test the resistor with an Ohmeter, should be around 1.5ohms IIRC! Recent thread on making a replacement one from Radio Shack parts or automotive leftovers!

This might be my fault
there is (or WAS) a part I took off thinking it was the 'tip-over' switch
red and red/yellow wire going to it,
about 1/2" x 1/2" x 2" or maybe 2-1/2"
I'd wager good money, I got the WRONG one!
even worse since the bracket came off with the thing
For list of things going on with this thing pics included,

Tipover switch
You would be well advised to not remove the tipover switch. It will save your engine. If your bike falls over while running it could, and usually does, hit the throttle on the ground and revs the engine to max with no oil to the bearings because it's on it's side and it will destroy your engine instantly. You can't stay young forever, but you can be immature for the rest of your life...
