Ren, yeah it's just a case of restricting the hose, you can squeeze with fingers even, but these aquarium type air-hose taps are the way to go

THIS MEANS I HAVE A BAD COIL, RIGHT??????
or should I have a go @ changing wires fix?????????
Well, you can TRY the plug wire fix, but the coil may be damaged internally to where you can't necessarily get to the problem section? You can try wiggling the high tension leads while measuring to see IF you get a reading other than the LEFT 1! IF you get intermittent readings, then the lead "may" be bad, and replacing it "may" help! IT will take some time to get a replacement coil(s) ....I'd replace both as a set if I were you with the NEW MikesXS ones, and bypass your ballast resistor, and you'll have power/spark to spare! While you're waiting for the new ones to arrive, you can PLAY with the old coil!

more test results.....
ok I printed this tech tip
http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread...=&threadid=121
in it, it says
There is a simple way to check the ignition advance wires.
Take off the four-wire plug on the ignition unit.
Did this whole step, result (VOM) set to 2000 ohms
760 across the board, +/_ 5ohm when moving/squeezing advance diaphram
NEXT, it says
In addition to these checks, I suggest that you measure
the resistance of the colored wires at the ignition unit.
Pull out the eight-wire plug
Measure resistance between Orange and Red/White,
and between Gray and Red/White.
Expect it to be a bit higher (approx 1 ohm higher)
than what you got at the coils themselves because
there is a resistor in the circuit.
If these tests are all OK, then the coils are probably fine.
RESULTS, (VOM set to 2000 ohms)
4.1 on both
I also checked the NGK boots for the first time,
This is a little wierd, NO continuity, NO ohm reading, ALL FOUR!
Haven't gotten to switching wire @ pigtail side of ignition unit (rear fender) don't really think I need to with the rest checking out ok, except for the coil it selfLast edited by renegade_xs11g; 07-05-2007, 07:50 PM.1980 XS11 Special aka The Monster

TopCat....................
yes I had an incident with the ballast resistor
posted about it.......http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread...threadid=14272
wire tied it back on, THIS makes me think about something....
DOES IT NEED TO BE GROUNDED??????????????1980 XS11 Special aka The Monster

Ren,
The ballast resistor does not need to be grounded, it's just bolted to the frame because it gets very hot during operation. IT is in line with the power lead, you don't want it being grounded=short!
Aha, the plug caps. There is a small straight screwdriver slot down in the PLUG end, that you can unscrew and remove the internals, there is a resistor in there as well! Folks have reported that their resistor was either badly corroded, or damaged, and was not providing any continuity! They emory clothed the ends, checked with ohmeter, and if within spec~5kohms, then reassembled! But a few folks have just put in a section of copper or such as a bridge between the parts, so they ended up with non -resistor caps! Only down side is radio frequency interference with car radios/static! Retest the coils high tension leads with the caps OFF, and see IF you get good readings on the one that measured 1? IF so, then the coils "may" be okay, and your caps may have been contributing to the intermittent firing???

non resistor caps, would explain my neighbor saing that everytime I start the engine that he gets static on his TV, I'm really thinking it's a CCTV sysem, but not sure.
The BAD news is I did test the coils w/o the caps.
Still leaning toward the #2 & #3 coil........
Gonna take the coils off, and remove the wires tommorow, hope that work's out1980 XS11 Special aka The Monster

OK...gentlemen.....figure THIS out
This morning I put everything back together,
Heading to the boss' house to get my paycheck....
40 miles each way
2.7 miles out...I start to get #2 & #3 back SNAFU
the only thing is I've still got 'em,
I did however find I pattern..... here goes
there are a couple of towns along the way
IF I stay in 5th gear down to 35 mph, I lose them,
ease into throttle, hit 3000-3500 rpm they come back,
rap on throttle, just a little bogging, nothing else
but IF I downshift to 3rd or 4th, I keep 'em,
NOW I have to say it's carb's and only by chance that it's 2 & 3
BUT it's starting to run better and better the more I ride,
still a little hesitant during acceleration, tho
Gonna give it another dose of sea-foam, and keep my fingers crossed1980 XS11 Special aka The Monster

I'm sticking by my bet that it is pick-up coils and/or wires, or possibly one of the connectors between the pick-ups and the ignition coils. That is the only common link between cylinders #2 and 3. I can't imagine what the odds would be that there is something repeatable happening in carb #2 and #3 at the same time when they're fed from two different fuel sourses.Ken Talbot

Hey Ken, I know what you mean, but you'd really need to hear this thing run, even sounds a little boggy until the other ones catch up, just the way it sounds....
But, we (my wife and I) went for a ride yesterday...into last night..
approx 153 miles round trip
Somewhere along the line, lost headlight, Hotwired it...blew main fuse....no spares....cut fuse out and crossed ends....
didn't even think there was a problem....UNTIL I noticed the headlight getting dimmer....less than 30 miles to go, we're not gonna make it.......
Bike dies along side of road....1:00 am
anyway through a long and boring series of events, and a few good samaritans, we made it home at 4am without the bike, we had to go and get it this morning, now here in driveway.
I THINK IT'S TIME TO BUY A NEWER BIKE!!!!1980 XS11 Special aka The Monster

Hey Ren,
Naw, it's just time to probably get a new REG/RECT unit from GEEZER! You lost your headlight because it stopped charging. You may not have noticed, but your tach may have not been working either!?
Recharge battery, and then check out Geezer's web site for troubleshooting techniques for the charging system. It's rare for the actual alternator to go bad, but the REG/RECT does age and gets fried.
Also, intermittent charging "COULD" have been a contributing factor to the rough running problems you have been experiencing! When the available voltage drops below ~10.5 volts, the TCI will konk out!
These are just growing pains, once you get it ironed out, it'll be a great machine, and I'm sure your SWMBO will forgive you! At least you spent some QUALITY TIME together!

I'm madder than she is, trust me....LOL
The MONSTER does run well, when running well.
Didn't even hiccup on the interstate, nice smooth steady STRONG, everything youd expect
Nope, tach was working, but not the gauge lights,
was thinking RLU, but not with the charging issue1980 XS11 Special aka The Monster

Them thar new rectifier's r kinda salty,
not that I mind the money,
SWMBO does
But I have a 1978 XS750, vin# name it a "2D" model,
stole the HALOGEN headlight from it, installed on MONSTER
then had the charging issue,
QUESTION: the rectifier, will the 750's fit the 11's?1980 XS11 Special aka The Monster
