  • yes, carb problems again

    Hello,

I am having problems. I cleaned the carbs with randy about two weeks ago. I finally got the time to mount them to the bike and started it up. It was idling high around 3K rpm.
I adjusted it down to around 1200, and took the bike for a short ride. Turned out to be a very, very short ride. The bike had no power. I was able to baby it and finely got the RPMs up and she suddenly took off like she was fired from a cannon. Fine until I got to the next hill and power steadily decreased until she died.

Got the bike home and cant get it to idle, either wants to idle at 3K or not at all. Took cabs off and found that idle mixture screw in carb 3 was broken and stuck in the hole.

Found how to clear the hole but now I need a new mixture screw. This is for a 79f.
I think I also need the “T” that fit between the carbs for the vacuum lines that go to the air-box. Any help for part source would be appreciated.

Will MikesXS pilot screw #48-5011 fit the 79f carbs?

    Ray,

The pilot screws were intact, what happened? Also, I have one of those vent tees.

As for the idling problem, you know those carbs need to be syncronized, right? I have the tool. Does this Sat work for you?

Sorry, that is for the later 80-81 series where the pilot screw is DOWN INSIDE a tube, not sitting on the outside!?

You can recondition your broken one by chucking the screw into a drill or dremmel so that the pointed end is sticking out and then use a sharpening stone, or emory cloth to regrind the end to a point!

But maybe Randy has a spare one of those as well!? And with the "T" AIR fitting, if yours is just damaged, the rubber coating falling off, you can get some O-rings to put over the ends that will allow it to fit and seal into the carbs....it's only an air vent, so doesn't have to be a tight a seal as if it was a fuel fitting!

        ooopppsss

Well, the pilot screws were intact. I was trying to adjust the idle and adjusted all screws in then out again 3 turns and tried to get bike to idle. I did not tighten anything in too hard but I guess it was enough. I think the screw that broke was the one that was bent. It was in carb 3.

I think that TCs idea about just fitting an “O” ring for the air “T” will work as the rubber coating is damaged but I think that the “T” itself is ok.

Randy thanks for offering to bail my but out again. I do not think that I will be able to get this back together again by the week end as I promised my folks to come to their house and fix some things around their house that need fixin.

Maybe the next week if you would be available. Hopefully I will have the pin reseated and carbs reassembled. I would like to replace the broken pin if I can find one.

          Ray,

I'll take a look for a spare pilot screw, but I don't think I have any. I think I would have given you one to replace the bent one? Well, I'll look anyway and let you know.
