What were you doing with the exhaust?

      like a belt squeal

The exhaust has rotted away where the stock system joins to the after market JAMA mufflers . I was installing a sleeve to cover this opening . I only got one installed on the left hand side . There is still alarge hole in the right hand side under the heat shield .
The noise almost reminded me of a fan belt squealing on a car .

        more clues

I pulled over and sustained revs about 4-5 k . When standing still there was no strange noise , only when putting along in a lower gear in traffic .

Put the bike up on the centrestand, start it up. Slip it into gear, letting it idle, and maybe try all the different gears. Have a look underneath to see if anything is close to rubbing.

What are you doing when you hear the sound? Are you turning or shifting? Does the sound seem to be coming more from the rear or front? How low are the RPMs since you said low speed? How is the rear braking system? Any chance it could be intermittently sticking?

When I hear the sound I'm just riding along . No turning and no shifting . Sound is coming from right side sorta in the middle (maybe) . Rpms vary as I speed up and slow down . Not the brakes I dont think . Sometimes it goes away and sometimes it is persistant . It is not constant but getting more often .

If your SURE nothing is rubbing and the brake pads are not staying in contact with the disc's then I would say you have a noise that is being made by exhaust gases slipping through some small gap in the doctored exhaust system. Check it out closely.

Have you checked the Middle Drive fluid level?

Rob may be onto something. An exhaust will make some funny sounds, especially when the escape gap is small. It could be making the sound at higher speeds, just harder to hear with all the other noise.

I'd check your drive fluid levels if you didn't change them yourself. Better safe than sorry there.
