  • Need; Starting Moter Ohm Meter readings !!

    Hi All,

Finally got the 78E on the road, really happy,

except, now when I shut Her down, then go to

crank up again, it it like dragging real bad.

Crank, clunk, crank, clunk, etc.. Soooo pulled the

starter today, and get some really goofy digital

    ohm meter reading:

Oh, My meter is on the 200 ohm scale, & with the

    probes connected, I get .5 ohms .

So, here is what I get, which do not seem good to Me.

cable con. to case: 58.7 ohms

cable con. to 1st brush: 54.1 ohms

cable con. to 2nd brush: .6 ohms

1st brush to case: .6 ohms

2nd brush to case: 54.1 ohms

    ok, now the armature.

between all the bars: .5 ohms

    bars & shaft mounting: infinity

Length of both brushes: 11.1 mm

So, is the starter shot, or what, &

what should the readings be ?

    Thanks, in advance,

    Hey Andy,

The Clymer's doesn't list any specific ohmages for the parts!

The brushes should be 0.21"/5.5mm or longer...you're good!

It mentions about the commutator, and the MICA that is normally below the level of the copper. If they are worn down even, it says an Xpert can undercut them!

If commutator bars are discolored, it indicates grounded armature coils!

It says to check for continuity:
    1) between pairs of armature bars
    2) between commutator bars and shaft mounting

IF shorted...which I think means NO or very little resistance found...REPLACE ARMATURE.

    Inspect field coil...Check Continuity:
    1) cable terminal to motor case,
    2) cable terminal to brush wire.
    If short or open...replace case.

I'm just paraphrasing from the Clymer's....remember, I'm no Electrical GURU....if you need clarification, post and hopefully a TRUE GURU will chime in!
