Well just wanted to drop a line to let you all know that I have my parts back from machine shop and almost back together. All looks good to this point, just have to put covers on, flip bike back over and refill all, and get running. I will let all know out I turn out witht this on going drama!!!

I think I am having problems with the fuel octopus and that I am going to bypas it. My thought was to run lines up from carbs to the tees, run line back to the tanks, and the run a line between the two lines. Not sure if anyone has done this but I think it would be better than running a line to each carb bank.

    Thanks
    Marc

Well all is good tonight bike all back together and everything seems good. All gears shift and work as they should and the motor runs perfect as long as I keep the bike in prome position. I am going to repair octopus and start fixing all the "little" problems. Fuse box replacement, starter switch, need new rear turn signal.

But all is GOOD, I rode about 15 miles tonight. I can't thank all who help me get to this point. TC has been a tremendious help. I will try to return the help from what I have learned.

I just can't wait to RIDE!!!!!!!!! This winter the bike goes back in garage and is getting pulled down to the frame and getting a complete restoration. I will post pics along the way for all to see on webshots.

Thanks again for all the advice and help.

That's great news, and hope that mysterious spring material in the oil pan won't come back to haunt you!?

And I've just been a mouthpiece so to speak for the many gurus that have been there before me, and I've just repeated what they've taught me, like Ken Talbot and others!

But this is what this site and the many members are here for, nice to hear a success story, and will be looking forward to your winter project photos! But right now, get those little details fixed, and get out there and RIDE!!! Summer's seem shorter than they used to be as a kid!
        T.C.

PS, could you ask and tell us what the machinist used to undercut the slots/shelves on the SOLID 1st gear wheel?? And along these same lines, I have a question for the rest of us.....

Undercutting those shelves and getting them FLAT would be assisted IF that solid gear and the recess was cut out. Can anybody tell me what IF any difference it makes as to why that gear wheel is solid against the back side vs. being hollow like the other gears with slots?? Is it because it is next to the middle driven gear, sloshing oil around? Or is it possibly due to retaining strength overall since it is a bit thinner than the other gear wheels??

I'm going to have at least one other set of gears to grind on when I get to working on basketcase, and would cut/drill thru those recessed areas to allow for a flat file or other tool to fit inside there to be able to make the slight undercut of that slot surface easier to do....IF it wouldn't compromise it's function!?

I believe my buddy used a mill to cut the slot in the solid 1st gear just being carefull to not get to deep. I was also wondering why it was not cut thruogh all the way. It would seem that it would hold better if it could go all the way through. The only possible answer we could come up with was that the bike probably has more torque in 1st than any other gear. Also you have the constant jolt of stopping the tranny when putting it into first gear. He then decided to just use a dremmel to cut the others. I hope this helps even though it may not explain.

Just wanted to let all I got the bike licensed to day and got to go for aout a 3 hour ride tonight. Bike ran perfect and all went well Boy did that feel awesome.

I also am working on getting a 650. Just got to get the fine details worked out. This bike is my uncles and has only been started 3 time in the past 15 yrs. The good thing was he had it running this past summer just to keep in all in as good as shape as possible for a bike that sits all the time and no one rides. I need to get all the details on the bike and post them for advice on price.

Be back in a couple days.

Well I am not a 100% sure that is why I did not post it. It is a 1978 Yamaha 650 but I have to go look at it hopefully tonight and will then give full details.

I had an XS650. I loved that bike for around town stuff. Easy to work on. Reliable. Good "lug around" power.

Not much fun over 60mph. When I got my first XS11, it was like night and day. The XS11 felt like a cadillac in comparison.

Well it sounds like the deal is falling through. he is not sure if he wants to sell the bike now. It is a Yamaha but not sure of model. It is chain drive and I think all the xs series was chain but not sure of that. I really did not need another one today but will keep my eyes anr ears open for another xs11 in the future as I love the one I have now.

                      Bought a 78

I started out on a 78 XS 650. About that same year Kawasaki came out with the 4 cylinder 650 that really blew the tires off of Yamaha. Of course we got them back with the XS11's. The Yamaha 650s were actually triump knockoffs and as was stated earlier did not have much in the way of top end speed. All of them were chain driven and I still have clothes hanging in my closet that have the little specks of oil all over them. The shaft drive was a blessing and was one of the reasons I upgraded in 80 to my MNS. Of course kicking everytning else's &(&(^^% on the road in the day was a lot of fun too.

Thanks for the info on the 650. I am not so sure at this point that I really want a 650. I think I will continue to look for another great deal on another XS11 to make a touring bike out of.

I probably will not be able to find another deal like this last one. Here is an itemized total for this past project with a couple of possible added in.

                        Bike $50.00
Air Filter - 0.00 (The foam around the top was bad so dealer gave it to me.)
silicone for gasket replacement oil and filter $25.00.
Beer to work on bike $36.00

                        The first ride - "PRICELESS"

                          History lesson

                          Cajun sez:-
The Yamaha 650s were actually triump knockoffs and as was stated earlier did not have much in the way of top end speed.
                          Hi Cajun,
                          The XS650 was Yammie's first 4-stroker.
It was in production for 14 years and sold worldwide by the hundreds of thousands.
The XS650 has achieved a wider "cult" status than has the XS/XJ 1100, perhaps because there's so many more of them.
Far from being a "Triumph knockoff" it was it's own machine. The engine unit was "inspired" by the Horex Imperator 400cc twin while the "look" is far more Matchless/AJS than it is Triumph. Later versions actually held the road quite well after Yammie hired some Brit guy to tweak the frame design and owners replaced the plastic swingarm bushings with bronze ones. Speed? Just over the magic "Ton".
Far too fast for this old geezer.

I am still looking for some side covers but have a turn signal on its way. Thanks to all that helped me along this porject and I'm sure I will be back again to help others and to ask for help again.

                              Battery Band

Pictures are good and I thought I noticed that you are missing your Battery Band. It bolts on to hold the battery in place.
Did you just not have it on when you took the pictures?

No I don't have it and I guess I had not paid enough attention to know that there was suppossed to be one. When I got the bike the side panels did not dome with it nor did the strap.

I also have one other problem I think is electrical. I went for a ride yesterday and after about 50 miles it just quit. i play around with it for a few minutes and it started running again. But now it is missing from the number three cyclinder at idle and it does not want to come down to idle without revving up the engine. The idle problem may be an air problem but I have not been able to pin point it yet. If anyone has any ideas please let me know.

                                Thanks
