    middle gear

    Hello,
    I need to change the gear oil in my 1979 XS1100, I want to know what viscosity oil to use. What is called out for by the book? I have havoline 90w and 85W-140. Are either of these acceptable for the middle gear?

    From the Havoline web site.

    "Havoline Gear Oils are recommended for use in all spiral bevel and hypoid differentials, power dividers, and oillubricated steering axle wheel bearings."

    Recommended, SAE 80 or 90 API GL-4 Hypoid gear Oil

    80/90 GL-4 Hypoid gear Oil can be usd for all condictions

      Also... MAKE SURE you can loosen the top fill hole BEFORE you drain the oil out! It gets pretty stuck over time...

        Yep, already got this same good advice from randy, I broke an allen wrench trying to open the filler hole already but have since gotten it open.

        The havoline 90w gear oil says that it is GL-5 compliant. I am not sure if this makes it compatable or not?

          GL-4, GL-5, GL-6 are quality and additive rating

          All can be used if hypoid gear oil

            Don't strip out the filler plug!!!

            If it is tight as mine was ( and probably everyone elses) try with the allen wrench and a pair or long nosed visegrips lightly gripping the top of the plug. turn both together and it should break free.
            It's way easier to clean up the marks on the outside of the plug than to start looking for a new one
