Rear Tire 78 xs11 sf

i currently have a 120/90-16 on the rear of my bike. does anyone know what the largest tire is i can put on it

The SF is a 1979 model . The E is the 1978, and was only a standard.

Hey Ink,

As Mason said, the 140, but with some clarification. This should be a black wall, not raised white lettering. I have a Dunlop 140/90-16 on mine, but it was the RWL, and they rubbed on the left side. I'm still running it, but will be sure to get a regular blackwall next time! Also, different tire brands will have slightly different fitting characteristics, so to be safe, a 130/90 is the stock size listed for the specials....IIRC!

Thanks for the answers. i wound up putting a 130 on it just to make sure i had all the clearance i needed. the biks says 78 but the title says 79 i guess i goofed when i said it was a 78.

Important to get the year right. The E's ran tubeless.

Correction: You meant to say the 78E ran with tubed tires - I just had mine done. Unless you have tubeless rims from a later bike.

My motor is a 79 xs1100sf. i can see, now that i started nickel and dimeing, how different the efgh's can be from the sf sg and sh's. i guess i'm on to the front end now to get the brakes right. i just got a good lesson on syncing my carbs whoo hoo that was fun. thanks for the help

Yep, meant to say tubeless, keyboard-chair interface problem. I think Merriam Cycle claims to be able to put tubeless on the 78s with a little bit of work, no rim change necessary.

My 80 special just put tires on to my surprise its running a tube up front and tubless on the rear.
Mechanic even look it up on the microfiche and shows the same tube on front tubless on rear who woulda thought.

If it makes you feel any better, the sf was a 79, not a 78. (No specials in 78)

To confirm you have a 79 special look on the motor plate right above the clutch housing for the serial number and also on the VIN tag on the frame up by the left side of the steering head . A 79 special scerial number will start with 3H3.

A 79 special is supposed to run tubeless tires both front and rear with a minimum H rating.
