Speedo woes!

My Speedo quit! I checked the cable, it was severed at the hub. Hey 25 year old cable...no prob. Bought a new cable ($30) lubed the hub, mounted it up and .....no speedo! Checked the cable, severed at the hub AGAIN! Hub is turning the cable fine...Speedo itself is DEAD! Locked up..no go!

SO, I know XJ1100john found a 140mph speedo that he replaced by mounting it into his original instrument cluster. Does anyone have a line on one? Or do I need to replace the whole sheebang from flebay?

Thanks MRO..so NOW we're bashing each others bikes huh?!

Since my XJ has an '80 XS heart, none of the idiot lights on the console work anyway. I have thought about swapping for a generic speedo/tach off another bike but I wouldn't know where to begin.

My understanding is that I can take an XS speedo out of its case and replace it into my XJ. I will just have to modify for the side turn tripometer reset. This is what XJ1100john did.
SO...
Anybody got an Xtra 140 or 160 mph speedo off a parts bike they wanna part with? Of course, being as picky as a begger can be, I would like it to have a black face.

Hi Guys,

Usual problem with speedos is the little brass bush where the cable enters; Try a TINY drop of lube ( you don't want it up in the head!), and try working it back and forward with a little screwdriver (or the end of the broken cable!) Usually they free off OK; if not, it was free!

It takes very little to break a cable; you can do it in about ten feet, if one end is turning and the other is not! Can even be caused by not engaging the top end in the speedo properly!
