One very small detail to work out. I didn't know there was a difference between rear caliper mount brackets until yesterday. I was about to mount the caliper upside down and was going to cut the "EXTRA" mount stabilizer to fit it USD, then realized it was shaped differently where it bends around the old shock and inserts into the round knob on the inside Swingarm(The yamaha engineers must have known I would be putting on the fatter R1 shock and designed this other bracket). The older one slips over this knob/catch and has a round rubber grommet (BUT doesn't fit around the R1 shock!). Question is, Does this one that slips onto the knob need its own grommet? It just feels like there's not enough play there. another small diff. is the extra 1/8 inch axle spacer welded on from factory.

As promised
Wasn't able to finish prettying up the Mod because it will not stop raining but here she is...Finished installing this '07 R1 monoshock. and THOROUGHLY demo'ed the new setup....WHAT A DIFFERENCE. The shock is very firm and rebounds better than the two old stock ones. I designed the top mount to take a Hayabusa as well, but looks like that would be way to stiff...What I really like is that this guy tracks the groung so well when coming off the hard bumps while breaking that it doesn't give the feel like the rear breaks aren't doing a good job while hitting roughs in the road (THERE'S ALOT OF THEM HERE). Also the launch is much smoother now with less sudden rear end dipping on hard takeoffs....It's a keeper....XSCHOP

POT HOLES
THERE ARE SO MANY CAVERNS HERE AFTER THE RAINS THAT I DIDN'T HAVE TO GO VERY FAR TO TEST THIS OUT.I WAS WORRIED MORE ABOUT SWINGARM FLEX THAN FRAME FLEX, BUT HAVEN'T RAN INTO ANY. I WENT TO CYCLE GEAR AND BOUGHT THE ADJUSTMENT TOOL FOR THESE TYPE SHOCKS ($8) AND SET IT TO IT'S LOWEST SPRING SETTING...SHE FEELS LIKE A NEW MACHINE....THE TOP MOUNT I MADE SLIPS ONTO THE SHOCK MOUNT AND WELDED AN UPPER SUPPORT BRACKET BETWEEN IT AND FRAME...LUCKY AGAIN THAT I DISCOVERED THE XS SPECIAL BRACKET HAS A DEEPER CURVE TO ALLOW THE FATTER SHOCK OR I WOULD BE MAKING THE BRAKE BRAKET FROM SCRATCH TO HANG IT UP-SIDE-DOWN...CHOPMDRNF

THINKING HEAVY
EVEN WITH THE LOW SPRING SETTING, AND ME AT 215 LBS THE S/A STILL DOESN'T REACH FULL PARALLEL TO THE GROUND...IMOO I DON'T THINK THIS WOULD EVER BOTTOM OUT. WITH THE OLD SHOCKS I REMEMBER BOTTOMED A COUPLE OF TIMES COMING OFF OR OVER THE RAILROAD TRACKS NEAR MY HOUSE. BUT THESE WERE LIKE BUTTER WHEN I BASICALLY JUMPED IT YESTERDAY....TIME TO PLAY BEAT THE TRAINMDRNF

frame is XSively tough
Prettied the frame back up.Rode this joker hard around town the last few days. Pulled a 'Bo Duke" on the tracks numerous times and she is solid, no flexing going on and rear breaking is way improved.. Oh yeah she's getting new paint if it would stop raining!....

xschop, I'm still waiting for you to post the details for the top shock mount! looks like you may have slightly modified the lower shock mount as well?
so, the lightest setting is more than adequate for 1-up riding....and there is plenty of adjustment left for 2-up, or us 'heavier set' riders and gear?
last dumb question....what is the device that appears to be attached to the rear brake disc? almost looks like a wheel lock.

yep, wheel lock. She doesn't leave home without it. The top shock is 3/16 inch thick walled U-Shaped iron with a 14mm hole drilled for the stock shock STUD that sticks out of the frame. One inch below the 14mm hole there is another 10mm hole for the R1 shock bolt to go thru. This just slips on and welds to the frame. the lower mount is relocated an inch back from stock. I did it this way to be able to put the stiffer Hayabusa shock on, but the smaller R1 shock is perfect from the get go....So if you are lazy, all you would need to do is remove the top 10mm R1 bushing and stick in a 14mm sleave...the bottom is already 10mm on the xs11....good to go

looks like this will be going on my LH (and still be able to put back to stock when/if I so desire)
still need to score a 2.909 final drive for the LH....with the R1 shock installed, I'll have MANY more final drives to choose from.
