  • new speedo unit installation...

I can't find my shop manual(s) and I've got another speedometer unit that I got for my front wheel...

...since I'm right in the middle of a divorce/living-arrangement-move my shop manuals are no where to be found...
    so, my question is:
when pulling the old speedo unit off, installing a "new" one how do you "tighten" the axle?
It's a "basic" question, but I need to know if there are *ANY* idiosyncrasies about WHAT gets tightened FIRST...
Do I tighten the axle nut until the axle is all the way against the "stops" THEN tighten the axle cinch bolt/nut?...
...OR tighten the cinch nut FIRST - THEN the axle nut?...
what's it say in the book?

I'm asking because my XS11 is 80 miles away in a friend's garage; I parked it there and flew to New Mexico for a vacation... now, I'm taking a shuttle to get the bike and ride it back - and I want to put the new speedo unit on BEFORE I ride (I tend to ride WAY too fast and I don't need a speeding ticket...)

WRONG!!! Tighten the AXLE NUT FIRST, and then the pinch bolts.

You sure about that Ray? T.C. also stated on his tire change tutorial to tighten the pinch bolt after centered the wheel, and then tighten the Axle nut, if I'm not mistaken:

After a bit of research, it does appear that the axle castle nut gets installed first... hey TC, fix your tech tip!

            Castle nut

gets tightened first, then center the brake caliper before tightening the pinch bolts.

            Snow is right.

I miss my "baby" so I'll probably be making the trip tonight or tomorrow at the latest... I'll let you know which way works "best". ...it's such a "basic" question I wasn't even thinking about "how to do it right"...

thanks guys - I'm gonna do some ridin'

The axle nut gets tightened first. You have to manually pull/pry the right fork tube out to align the brake rotor in the slot in the fork tube where the caliper resides. Once that is done, then tighten the pinch bolt.
Here is the procedure as written in my Clymer manual.

There are instructions in the Clymers manual. In my book it's in chapter 8, page 194, paragraph #6. It says:
"On Special models, tighten the axle nut to 76 ft.lbs (103 N*m) and install new cotter pin. Move the front forks up and down several times. Move the right hand fork sideways until the left hand disc (that must be a typo, it should read right hand disc) is centered within the caliper assembly. (Figure 13), Tighten the axle pinch bolt to 14.5 ft.-lbs.(20N*m)"

The Special only has one pinch bolt. It's not like the Standard that uses a cap to secure the axle to the forks like your bike does. Go look at your Special, and you will see what I'm talking about.

While doing the above mentioned research, one page finally gave a solid, logical reason for the tightening order - the page stated that the pinch bolt is there soley to keep the axle on should the axle castle nut come off...can anyone confirm this?

                          *edit*
I find it a lot easier to remember how to do things if I know *why* they have to be done, especially assembly order.

I think the caliper gets centered over the disk and the pinch holds it in place...I can't remember for sure.
