Ok i replaced the coils and checked the ignition unit (TCI) as per the thread. My question is this- Does the bike (80 SG) have fusible links that would have blown- connecting to the #1 and #4 ignition coil? Those coils do not fire and also would the ballastor resistor have anything to do with the #1 and #4 coil not firing. There is absolutely no spark going to these coils.I have a used wiring harness and ballastor resistor coming that i got cheap.Any ideas?

I would check the pick-up coils. You may have a bad wire on one, or just a bad connection between the coils and the TCI. I didn't think the '80 used the ballast resistor, but I could be wrong. I'm at work, so I don't have my wire diagrams handy.Ray Matteis

The balast resistor works for all 4 cylinders, right? So it probably isn't the problem if 2&3 are running.
I'll second Ray's opinion of pickup coils wires. Also, I don't believe the 80+ used ballasts, but rather had coils that didn't need em. You could try *temporarily* removing the ballast from the circuit and seeing if that changes anything.
The fuse for the whole ignition is under the side cover, but if some of the ignition is working, that's not the problem.
Make sure you have the coil primary wires plugged in correctly and they aren't corroded (wires connecting the coils to the wiring harness).
*edit* what test did you use? Did you move the pickup coils around while testing? Usuaully when they break, they still make at least partial contact while sitting in stationary position, but break contact while the advancer moves....1979 XS11F Standard - Maya - 1196cc (out of order)

Yup, the '80 still uses the ballast resistor and the 2H7 TCI. however, a bad ballast resistor will not cause only 1 coil to not fire.
THIS thread may help with the wiring - although it only shows for 78-79, the ONLY change for these circuits in 80 was the addition of the 4-wire Main Switch. The extra wire is used in the LIGHT CHECKER or HAZZARD lights depending on your model.

I checked pickup coils by hooking a multimeter and moving the wires. They seemed good but what would cause the #1 and #4 ignition coil not to fire?No spark nothing!1980 XS1100 SG

Check with Randy's home page, and look at the solder connections on the TCI box. It's an easy fix, just unscrew the cover and use a soldering iron to remelt and add just a little more solder to the connection. It may be all you need. Other than that, I would still look at ALL your connections. As you seem to be able to use the VOM, check the resistance through the wire harness for the coils. I would check both the pickup coils, and the HE coils. See if the resistance is off a lot on one or the other. Also VERIFY that the coil low voltage wires are NOT CROSSED. this also applies to both pickup and HE coils.Ray Matteis

Pickup coils good...
Ignition coil good??????? - didn't read about your test??
Ballast is common to both coils, so rule it out.
The only thing left is the TCI, like Ray wrote, do the solder fix. Go to my WWW above for illustration. You don't even have to remove the TCI from the bike. Let us know how it goes.
