  • Crap, I dropped it!

I dropped the bike today. Was swapping out for new handlebars, grips and mirrors. I had everything put back together and was strarting it up for a test ride when the clutch handle slipped and the bike took off without me. It didn't hurt any of us, but it did knock of couple of bricks out of the side of the house. Now inexplicabley, the engine is idleing at 4k rpm and the idle adjusment screw does not change it. Any ideas why?

Sorry to hear about your spill. Good thing no one was hurt!

You sure it wasn't idling that high before the bar swap? If they're too tall it could be pulling the throttle cable tighter. Could also be a possible bind from the knock.

Maybe knocked it out of sync?

I'm sure the real gurus will chime in, too.

Bummer about the drop. If the bike took out a few bricks on the house just what part of the bike made contact?
I also would check the cable and throttle grip. Perhaps the throttle is not returning fully to the idle position if the throttle side grip was damaged. Or as was already pointed out the cable is in need of some adjustment after changing the bars and the high idle has nothing to do with the drop.

It's still mad at you, and will probably try to run away from home again.
I agree... you have a cable problem. Does the throttle still move easily?

The throttle does not move as easily as it should, I think maybe your right and I need to adjust the cable for the lower bars. contact with the house took place at the left turn signal, engine cover, and mirror. left turn signal is demolished, engine cover has a groove, and the mirror is scratched. also the lower bars made contact with the tank( hadn't even had a chance to adjust those yet) and put in a small dent and chipped a quarter sized piece of paint off. My easy project just got a lot harder.

also I have some good dupont paint at home, is there anyone near NW arkansas that would be willing to teach me how to paint? since I chipped the tank it seems like a good time to learn.

              Hi Casey,
it's like riding a bicycle, no one can teach you, you have to learn. Get yourself the gear, compressor, paint gun etc (fizzbombs are garbage) and practice on stuff you don't care about. Fiddle with various paint/solvent ratios and different air pressures. 80% of good paint is the prep work. Those solvents ain't healthy neither, get a good breathing mask.

Check and make sure that the cable housing is still in all of its little grometts too. Could be that simple.

                          Painting

Pay particular attention to the mix ratio between the paint and reducer. That is the key and pick a high quality clear coat to finish that is compatible with the paint.

Practice on something and do a search on the web for spraying techniques. It is really not that difficult. You don't want to spray to light or too heavy. The first causes a dry sandy coat and of course the second might run. You want overlapping strokes. Don't try to finish it in one or two coats. Build it up slowly.

                          You will get it.
