  • Well, clutch isn't slipping....BUT...now it's running weird

Thanks for the advice on the slipping clutch, it was just an adjustment

I had to take an air filter off and hold my hade over the mouth of the carb to get it to start.
    I know, I know.
    That's not the answer.
Still no time to rebuild those carbs.
In process of replacing a wheel bearing on the car,
I had to chase after a bearing puller, for the car
plus it was a very nice day. & I didn't want to drive the FREIGHTLINER

any way, I can't tell if it's an intermittant miss, or intermittant fire.
seems to be around 3000 rpm

motor is very cold blooded, it takes 5 or 10 min before I can take-off
then it takes about 15-20 min. to run any better once it gets thru this "2nd warm up"
it runs pretty good and strong,
    pops in the pipe tho'
I did check, not adjust, the timing last weekend, it was @ 10 btdc
the tach is way off too, gonna follw the post on that I saw here

    Any ideas,
    thanks John

Carbs need to be cleaned and sync'd. Pay particular attention to the tiny orifice in the bottom of the float bowl that supplies fuel to the enrichener circuit.

I agree with Ken. (But find his new "Self Portrait" most disagreeable)

Really, Ken. What's the deal with that?
I'm sorry, but I find it a little... frightening?

Not to worry, Prom, it won't be around long. Was playing around yesterday with an add-on from Photobocket called "Meez".

New Carb kits, had a few questions.....

            First Question has been answered:
            mains on a spec #1 & #4 get the 110's and #2 & #4 get the 120's

Thanks for clearing that up gentlemen

Now the bike: Stock 1980 XS1100 G (spec. not Mid-Nite)
I've made a couple of minor mods...
#1 removal of air box, I've opted for pods
            #2 I've replaced non-salvagable mufflers w/straight pipe
1-7/8" ID 33" long from the end of the factory collector,
no cross between the two sides.

            Really SOUNDS GREAT!!!

            Now the Question:
Are the above described Mains gonna be correct,
or should I do all 110's or something else????

            THANKS, John

                Hey Renegade,

You didn't mention, or I don't remember what sizes of mains you found to begin with, but I would suspect 110's across all 4.

The jetting guide in the tech tips....you have read it haven't you
recommends about 3 sizes up on mains with both pods and aftermarket pipes. Since you already have a couple of 120's, you would only really need to get a couple more, and you would actually be 4 sizes up from the 110 stock.

Not too many of us bother with the staggered mains that I know of? I've got Indy pods, and 4-1 and run 117.5's, but after my Dyno run a few years ago, was told I could have probably gone up another size which would be the 120's! YMMV!
