Sorry if I screw up typing, I just spent a few hours in the garage and my hands just stopped short of bleeding. Needless to say MOST of the blue on my exhaust is gone. I got kind of curios about what an xs would sound like with straight pipes. since my number 2 header was off, I just reinstalled it offset so that it did not line up with the left side exhaust. BTW: stock exhaust system. Anyway, I cranked it and what a sound. I think with 4 headers, it would sound like my my friends chevelle. That was only one cyl. For my project bike, I am definitely going to run straight headers If I were to run with no exhaust, I think it would sound a lot better than an HD with no exhaust.

You may play hell tuning it with open headers. You may end up owning a complete set of main jets. By complete set I mean 4 of everything between 110 and 180 or however big they make em. Maybe not, but I would think it would be pretty tough.

i went to mac 4 into 1's and while good, my stock setup that i just put back on rips,

i think the mac had better low end and the stock pipe kick's it's butt, 4 grand to redline, go figure,

i knew i was missing something and couldn't finger it out, but now i know,

the power makes up for the added weight of the stock units and maybe stabilizes a top heavy feeling, thought i didn't like the looks of stock but yet again i changed my mine

        yamaha had it right

When I got the Jardine 4 int 2 'spagetti' pipes I had to start it once before installing the mufflers. Darn loud.

When I got my (RC Engineering?) 4 into 1 for my LG it came with no baffle in the muffler. Just a long empty megaphone can. I rode that for a week. Too loud but was fun for a bit. I scrounged a baffle from a wrecking yard and it quieted it a bit. By a bit, if the open can was 10 on a scale of one to 10 then the baffle brought it to 9.1.
I finally added 8 SuperTrapp discs with endcap and it is now quite acceptable, about 4 on 1 to 10.

HobbyMan, I'm running a 4-2-1 on mine. It was a little tame for Maximan, but is working out pretty well for me.

Winning aftermarket pipes , po said they were sold from the yamaha dealer in town ...
I had a weak rear mounting bracket , so had open headers after the tail pipe fell off in the road . it really rumbled .
I would think on the road you would want the back pressure .
drag racing might be a differant story ...

I am running MAC 4-1's for several years now. Took a bit of tuning to get everything right. Bigger main and pilot jets, altered timing, light porting, etc. That is probably because they flow well. Though, they do not seem to have tons of grunt under 3000, after that it is a rocket.

Hobyman, if you are going to run straight pipes you are in for some pipe length tuning and your power band might tighten up based on the length of your pipes. Back pressure, exhaust pulse speed and all that stuff, ya know. Now, if you want it loud and fast in several RPM ranges, make a 4-1 with equal length tubes and try to vary the length of the collector. That way you can get the high end power as well as maintaining the scavenging effect provided by a collector.

I am runnin the stock headers 4-2 with the mufflers cut off and some 1 3/4 pipe in there place. I also installed a washer welded to a bolt inside the pipe for back pressure. Tunable at that!
