Run a lost title, missing owner thingie. Several threads last year concerning such, etc. I got titles for two bikes that way.

What is a ''title''???
Over here we have a registration document called a V5c that goes with the bike and the registration number. Is it the same thing?
If we buy a bike that the PO has lost the V5c we can just apply for a replacement copy quoting the reg No. and be issued with a replacement.
If we don't know the reg No. we have to get a letter from a authorized club/register dating the vehicle by its frame No. and can then apply for an age related new reg No. and V5c
I'm guessing that its not that simple over your side of the water??????Tom

All 50 states have their own titling system. Some are same,some differ. Here in Oklahoma, you just need a good frame # with title to register. The chop I am building has a title to the frame #, but the engine # doesn't matter.....I have ridden a few years with just one plate/registration on diff xs11's. I have been pulled over twice and never had an officer care weather my Tag matched the frame number because (the real beauty) all my bikes look like a 1979....And seriously,I doubt that one has ever been reported stolen....in the last 25 yrsMDRNF

registration vs. title
Our registration is a piece of paper that stays with the bike (that we have to be able to present to an officer of the law) proving that we paid the fee that essentially allows us to use the roads. In Michigan you also get a sticker to put on your license plate showing the date you're "paid up" through.
Title is different. Title is basically a proof of purchase. 'Having a clear title' means that you can prove that you are the rightful owner of that particular bike (or car, or boat, or house, etc...).-Do what makes you happy.

Get with Prometheus on this one. He was talking about doing an abandoned vehicle thing before also... people that left bikes in his shop too long. If it's not too difficult, I'd sure like to see another one of these things on the road, instead of just sitting there being an organ donor for parts. That sure seems like a waste of what looks like a complete bike. Just my two cents

Partsnmore also has completely new ignition switches with two keys for 15 bucks... so there's another option. Good job Rappin'... I've never had ANY dealings with a locksmith for less than 50 bucks! lol.

if I recall correctly, you posted on chopperfix that its a 78E.
before spending a dime, unplug the main switch 3-pin plug from the harness then short the RED and BROWN leads on the harness socket to bypass the main switch and START THE BIKE
of course you won't have tail lights or front running lights - and you'll have to remove the fairing to access the wiring connector from the main switch (probably in that blue vinyl bag between the headlight ears on the forks).
btw, nice score. what are the plans for the bike - donor material for your XJ1100?

Up here, in the great white north, you can write out a bill of sale (title) on any scrap of paper. As long as the VIN on the bike or car has not been reported stolen, or written off, we have no problems registering it.
My GT-750 shows as never having been registered, anywhere, in Canada. As far as I know, the original owners bought it for getting around on the farm.. so they may have never registered it.
To get it registered now, I have to have the bike safety inspected.
My Shadow 1100 was an insurance write-off. It had been stolen. When it was recovered, the insurance had already paid out the owner, and he didn't want it. I had to have the VIN reinstated, and that required a safety inspection and a clearance from the police. Worth it to get a 1985 Shadow 1100 with less than 4000kms, in 1988 for $2800.Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

While we have you on line Tom just curious about XS's in the UK do you ever see North American models over there? I guess the quickest way to I/D one would be the aluminum engine.....just curious.

Hi desert1,
I am over in UK too; We do have some US versions with various members of the forum ( Including me!-SG!) A lot of bikes from the 70s and 80s were imported to here from the US about 10 years ago.
