  • Exhaust doesn't fit

Got my new 4-1 mac yesterday and thought I'd throw it on tonight. However it doesn't make it tight up to the head 'cos the oil cooler pipes are in the way.
    Can I:
    1. Use a flexi steel pipe instead of the solid metal ones that I can then route to my fancy? If so do I need a special mating connection or can I just hacksaw of the metal pipe by the filter and secure the flexi to the stub? (This I think is my favorite option so far)
    2. Bend the pipe and hence reposition them so that the exhaust clears them? - not sure this will work as I think that even if I move them to the side of the frame, there still won't be enough room and they will also rest against the exhaust.
    3. Is there a kit designed for this and if so how much roughly?

    As ever thanks in advance.

I had installed a OEM cooler from an 850 triple on my bike, and I had to cut the steel lines, and use cloth braided hose in it's place. I cut the metal pipes about 1 inch from from the adapter plate, AND I had to braze some raised ridges around the ends of the pipe, sort of like a flare, to keep the hose from blowing off. You'll need to do that where you cut the upper end of the steel line also. DAMHIK.

Nice looker John - I checked out your web album. I see what you mean, isn't that cooler a bit smaller than the original? Why did you have to change it? Can't I just put a different type of pipe on it and keep the original?
As a side note, what is the reasoning behind the 1 & 4 cyls and 2 & 3 being together. My old stock exhaust is 1&2, 3&4.

      Sorry for more questions.

The advantage of all this is - I was impatient to get my new pipes on but now I have to wait I'll get some of that ceramic spray for the insides.

Those pics don't have the OEM 850 cooler...that is a Lockhart brand cooler. The 850 cooler wouldn't bolt up to the frame, so I had to secure it with tie wraps. I replaced the 850 cooler a few years ago when I found the Lockhart on a 78E that I bought for parts. The 78 also had the Spaghetti Pipes on it. I thought they looked pretty cool, so I pulled the MNS pipes off of my bike and installed the Jardines, and sold the MNS pipes. The pics of the engine disassembled is when I did the bigbore a few years ago.
