  • Question about side cover repair

    Hey all,

Steve from San Antonio here. I have been lurking since July or so. This is my first post here on the forum.
Just got PITA, my '81 Midnight on the road after a top end rebuild. My current problem is a broken locking post on the left side battery cover. I thought I remembered seeing a fix on the old Yahoo groups message archive, but couldn't find it. Anybody out there repaired the little hook or whatever it is on the inside of the cover?
    Any help appreciated.

I repaired a broken lock tab a couple of years back, on SWMO's bike I think. I used some 1/8" thich plexi and some Loctite brand CA glue and haven't had a problem since. The only tricky part would be figuring out what the tab should look like if you don't have a good one on hand to use as a model. Perhaps a digital photo might help....

      left cover post

      Ken,

A pic would be great. My post was broken when I got the bike; thought it would be a pain to fix, so I bought one off some guy on Ebay- post broken too
      Any help appreciated.

I got some plastic weld from NAPA, stuck it on and then trimmed it with a dremel and a sanding wheel. Stuff works great!!

              Praise Ken??

I was about to say, "Ken, You Da Man!!, but OK; PRAISE KEN, PRAISE KEN!!
Not sure how I'm going to go about it yet; probably going to use some mesh and fiberglass resin to make a post because I have a boatload laying around here that is left over from a mid-summer Sea Doo hull repair. Will then just go to town with my Dremmel to shape it.

              Thanx Ken

I spent 20 minutes looking for something like that before I did my other thread...that's just sick.

Don't feel bad, draketrumpet. When you were looking, the image links were broken, and Catatonicbug was probably still producing the drawing!!

Nope... I've had that drawing since late last summer. I was in the process of completely re-creating the whole tab on an old side cover, before it blew off on the freeway. My dad actually id the drawing, and was going to machine the part for me. I posted the drawing in another thread somwhere, askng if anyone was interested in having tabs made for them too.

BTW Texas_Steve in San Antonio lurking since July (of 2002?) I am John in San Antonio and was giving up hope of finding a like minded soul here in River City.

I am in NW SA near 1604 and Bandera - where are you and can you ride that thing without the left side cover? I will be back in town Saturday and ready to ride I am sure assuming the weather holds.

I don't know if you'll have much luck John, his profile says the last time he had any activity on the site was in 2003.
