  • windshield cleaning

Well, I'm starting to thing about the faring a little. I shouldn't have TOO much more to go before I can remount it.

The PO had taped his For Sale sign onto the windshield with duct tape. Now, I have a glob of DT glop to deal with. What would be the best thing to clean it with? Petrolium based solvants are out due to crazing the material, right?

You'll be fine...................give a shot of Brake-Kleen on a lean rag and wipe away. After which you can polish it up some and look real clear using Meguiar's No. 17 Clear Plastic Cleaner. You get a bottle of this at your local automotive paint supplier............hope that answers your question.

Goo Be Gone, a citris based cleaner works pretty well. I used it to clean up double sided tape the PO had used to mount the GPS.

I use Meguiars Plastix polish on my windshield and the visors of the Helmets. It also works really good on Jeep soft top windows.

Well, I have always used with Novus plastic polish #2, medium, or Honda's aresol windshield cleaner. Either one is about $10 - $12 but lasts a long time. Most bike shops will have one or both of these items.

Have not tried them, but would not put solvents on my windshield, ever. I don't even use gas station windshield washer bucket 'wash' on my Vetter windshield.

Have found that those blue paper shop towls sold at most auto parts places and wallyworld work very well to clean windshields and visors.

Baby oil will take the sticky stuff off. Then just use some mild soap and water to take the oil off. Works every time.

Another EXCELLENT product is called Plexus. It comes in a spray can and is made specifically for the plexiglass and lexan bike windshields. If you follow the directions, it will actually fill fine scratches and scuffs. My old windshield is pretty rough, but with this stuff, it helps tremendously and makes a huge difference at night with other headlights hitting it. Without it, all you see is the scratches instead of the road.

              Just another option.

bieng an aircraft mechanic we use alot of different cleaners for plastic and acrylic windshields. I have used the plexus product repeatedly and have found it quite effective. Just remember that it is a polish so use two soft terry cloth towels one to apply the polish after spraying the windshield and the other to "buff" out the polish.
Do NOT use lemon pledge this does make the glass look shiny and does fill in a lot of scratches but will contaminate the plastic as will any other oil based product, which will cause the plastic to cloud and craze. If you have extensive scratches there is a plastic rubbing compound availible that when used with a power buffer can completely remove most noticable scratches. Tap Plastics sells it but use caution optical quality will be a factor.
                hope this helps
                keep em running!

That's interesting. I used to read some of the pilot & aircraft owners news groups years ago (the hardware is facinating). They all seemed to use Lemon Pledge exclusively.
