  • oil cooler results #2

    AS I promised, here are more results:
    all measurements in deg F. There may be error because this in an inferred thermometer which must be pointed at the same spot from the same angle for every measurement. It is about 40 deg in my garage with the door open. I started with the engine idling and a fan in front of the wheel set on high. This fan sucks so that is not much air flow. To simulate driving conditions and to compensate for the sucky fan, I set the air compressor hose on 15psi and blew air into the cooler from approx 6 in away. Keep in mind that I am no scientist, but here are the results. They speak for themselves.

    EHT:210
    CHT: 350
    OI:160
    OO:140

    EHT= exhaust header temp
    CHT=cylinder head temperature
    OI=oil in
    OO=oil out.

    When I continued to supply air, the oil temperature went down to about 130 in a minute or so. I am sure sitting in traffic the cooler helps a lot. When the weather warms up back into the 90's, I will go sit in some traffic with my thermometer. I may try again with the engine above idle to give some higher temperatures. If you don't care, thats fine. If you do, thats cool. I just thought some people might want to know.

    Great test.....I know it may not be tooo accurate but it does give an idea, i was interested in the in/out temps, if you do that in traffic and it shows the same sorta differences or not. I have removed my cooler cause i didnt like the mess and looks of it around the front end but wasnt sure how it will go as far as temp here on a hot day in aussie, so far i havent noticed any changes, keep em' up "hobby" I'll read on......

      Hey HobbyMan,

      Great initial work! Looking forward to the warm/hot weather day stuck in traffic readings. Right now your ambient temp was only 40 degrees, so lots can get released thru radiation as well as Convection with the air flow. But once the air temps get close to the 90 degree mark, not sure how much of a cooling effect you'll see? However, with the Head temps over 350, If the oil temp going in gets closer to the 200 mark, then there's still a 100 degree variation in oil to air temp, so might still provide a decent amount of cooling affect, more so than not one there at all!??

        I forgot to mention that I picked up a transmission oil cooler or $1 that I am going to do some experimenting with heating and cooling. Is there a cheap clamp on temperature gauge that interfaces with a computer? I think some computer printouts would be REALLY cool. Just plug in my Dad's laptop going down the freeway. I don't think he would like that. SUGAR HIGH AHHHHHHH.. .I just ate a pop tart. I can't stop typing any way I will hopefully get some results soon. I think that the only way to get people to stop debating about it is to put out some cold hard facts. Actually hot hard, whatever...

        BTW: TC look down at those numbers. they are getting close. You are going to have to edit my status soon

          you get the debate honors by sheer effort...

          yes it is a fact any additional suface that is exposed to non combustion chamber level heat will cause a migration;transfer of temperature, to that medium, and vise a versa.

          so long as the engine is on and generating heat, the cooling mechajizm, regardless of fins, or cooler is an essential sub system.

          i think when the engine is shut off the cooling works until the giver and the taker of heat evens out to ambient.

          the pace in which this may occours may depend on wind chill, in a vacuum without that influence, and isolated from wind chill the designed performance of the fins and cooler,still operates,

          your contention is that you question the adequacy of unassisted cooling to enhance the long term durability of air cool internal cumbustion engines, or even real time day to day performance.

          i'd say timely oil changes negates, this disparity to nominal.

            well, without an aluminum and oil material test, it is impossible to tell whether or not letting the substance in question reach its upper threshold operating temperature on a continual basis affects is life span. I change my oil before service intervals anyway so I don't worry about oil life soo much. I am sure it lubricates more efficiently at lower temps from its max allow able. There must be some effect on the aluminum from running it day to day at it's upper operating temperature tolerances. People worry about overheating an air cooled engine from sitting in 100+ weather in traffic. I just think that an oil cooler would help prevent that from happening while giving a few extra boni. I don't understand what I am typing any more Its too late...

              i think these engines can handle 120 plus degrees, sitting in traffic.

                          My mostly stock 78 ran at 120C (284F)measured behind cylinder 1&2 on a normal day but bumped up to 140C with 1200cc pistons, both oil -cooled engines, on a hot day, talkin 30C, the needle in my temp gauge, looks like it's bending pinned hard at 160C(320F)

                            20 degree drop?

                            Does not sound right, but I've never checked temps on oil/tranny in/out yet.

                            have done some tests on industrial engine radiators.
                            water temp in/out difference only 6/8 degrees which is normal.

                              Thats what my thermometer said. Like I mentioned, there could be innacuracies. I put the gun as close as possoble to get an accurate measurement. If you lette the lense "see" other things, you will get false temps. I have to move the bun back and forth around the front wheel thus not gettting an instantanious in and out temp. I don't know if the brass fittings transfer the heat as well as other materials. I don't doubt that there are some major innacuracies. If I continue to do this test getting the same results, then the probability for innacuracy goes down.
                              pggg: thats what I was reading behind the cyls. Between the cams runs considerably hotter where I was taking the measurements. I did not want to measure cooling fins which has air flow over them.
