That little middle gear vent hose goes right over the back of the engine and through the hose keeper where your battery hose is also routed.

      Actually

The mid drive hose (the small one in the pic) is routed up under the seat, behind the airbox, and attaches to a bracket that bolts to the frame where the upper air box bolt bolts to the frame. That is the corect location for that hose. Your hose bracket may have been removed by the PO, but this is the proper location for it.

yes it stays open, and should be vented high, the bracket that holds it is attached to the top bolt that holds the airbox to the frame visable when the gastank is removed

Yes it stays open. I didn't see the small flat bracket that the hose is secured to in the pic, but the bracket should be bolted to the same attaching point that the upper bolt for the airbox bolts to. In fact, the upper airbox bolt holds the vent hose bracket in place also.
I have a pic of this bracket and it's location, but it is stored in my other 'puter, and that machine is down right now. I am using a borrowed computer at the present time.

Do you have a flat one with a little hook shape at one end? The hose goes in that hook shape.

There should be another clamp on the side of the airbox for the fuel tank drain hose. BTW: If anyone has theirs routed down to the ground, you might want to think about relocating it to the top. Or am I just paranoid?

Hobbyman , are you talking about the fuel tank drain hose? If so I would suggest running it to the ground, that hose allows overfill or splashing gas that gets into the The "tray" around the gas fill hole to drain. If you route it higher the hose might just fill up with gas and just sit there, or it may leak onto something you dont want gas on.

I am sorry, The fuel tank vent goes down. Any other way would defeat the purpose of having the hose. I meant the middle drive gear vent. Wouldn't dust'n'stuff get inn to the MD if it was routed down?

You should hook the middle gear vent hose to the airbox if you still have one. If not I think the consensus is to put a small filter on it and route it upward, (between pod filters). I just left mine in its preformed shape and had the end pointing toward the battery. I did notice while sitting at a light that it works, Had some oil residue(steam) I guess coming out of it when idling.

There is no place on the airbox for it. You would have to fabricate a nipple on the airbox to attach it there, and then you may put the drive in a slight vacuum. I don't know if that would hurt anything tho...
