    Hi Stoked,

There have been a couple of fairly recent threads about drive problems; Middle and rear.

Try a search, there will be lots to read!

I hope it's clear that this is only a mod if you want a chaindrive and variable rear wheel width. I'd hate for a casual reader to see this as a must have mod. From what I've read here, with regular maintenance the middle gear is unlikely to fail, and one of the advantages of the shaft drive is the simple maintenance.

            That's correct ...
This mod is not due to fear of drive train failure. The stock shaft is a GOOD unit and if properly maintained should last the life of the bike.
This mod is to ......... get weight reduced including the all important "sprung" weight, to allow for use of fatter rear tires if desired, to allow versatility in sprocket size at the rear end for any given requirement, deliver more power to the ground but this is arguable, remove the "settling" effect when the throttle is shut down quickly which is an issue if required while in a corner and the old .... do something different for the sake of doing something different.

Mine locked up mid-corner, about 40 or 50mph, luckily skidded to a halt off the road without falling off, the U-joint I blame, grinding and vibrating often, was only a matter of time, totally crazy not to fix immediately months beforehand, the middle drives' main bolt to the driveshaft, snapped like a matchstick while the driveshaft flailed around inside the swingarm and jammed solid. Also the turbo XS drag racer fella, reckoned the WHOLE DRIVESHAFT kept snapping like a matchstick too

                          He's Back

Back to work that is. First of all, I place first vote on changing "GURU" status to the real folks who can demonstrate a complete teardown and rebuild of the XS11 carbs without a manual. That wouldn't be me. Not that I can't do it, but haven't had the need to. I paid an old Yamaha Tech (good guy named Mouse) @150 bucks...voila....I have new carbs that have never given me one problem. "GURU" status is for Prometheus, or Maximan, MRO, Snow, others that have actually been down to the Crank bearings and such. Although I have fixed a couple of 2nd gears....Then Again because of "GURUs" like Topcat who spelled it out for us. If it wasn't for Maximan coming to my home and checking out the xs750 mod, and putting it on here....It probly still wouldn't have been spelled out with photos so wonderfully. By the way after I put @ 7000 miles on it, the final drive is now on my friend's xs11,Waste not, want not.I now have a similar Drive Ratio but with a 200 tire. I have got only @ 50-60 miles on the set-up and finally got the right spring for the R1 monoshock which is 800Lbs/in because the swingarm is 4" longer than the stock xs11 S/A. I am not a "forum Guru" either. I can honestly say that this is the only place I go to check on other folks interests in the xs11 (xs11-UK also) of which we all have connection. Could be that it is a little 'get-a-way" at times. I can't believe that some people are so serious about some things. I think there should be some "FLUFF GURU" award here. Yeah, we know who we are! I have learned some intricate knowledge about the xs11 doing this Chaindrive. The engineers at Yamaha, took the xs 750/850 engine molds and added a cylinder RIGHT FROM THE MOLD! I took the drive housing and putit on an xs750, popped right on and noticed the mold spooged alloy from the exact place on both bikes which I re- CNC'd to make an indention for. Another fact I found is that the middle drive shafts are all manufactured to spec. so I didn't toss the donor middle drives because you can reinstall your old middle shaft into one of the and get new gears if you've fried the old ones (from not taking care of the Mid-gear oil). And NO This mod is not mandatory. Only if you want a tire wider than 160 up to a 200. If you want to hard tail your xs1100, then a 240 tire can be achieved.....If you plan on going larger than a 180 tire then you should skim off @ 3-5mm from the lower frame tube, easy enough....THE CORNERING ON THE BIKE IS PHENOMENAL! BYE- BYE- to my friend on his V-max. The corners are my domain now. And also say good-bye to MR. DRIVE-SHAFT SIDEWAYS TORQUE that I am paranoid of. I am still not used to the fact that it is gone. I wasn't able to gun it before in a left corner....not anymore....And like Pggg said, she's a lot zippier. Probaly cuz I lost alot more rear wheel weight and of course the chain DOESN'T HAVE ANY BACKLASH LIKE THE SHAFT......That said, I'm back to earning more vacation time(working) so I can disappear again next year......oh yeah here's a pic of members SCAPPOD's housing with a little somethin extra he can brag about....Peace to All Guru's (including the Fluffers)

Nope. Mouse works at A&A Cycles in OKC which specializes in Yammy's. He helped me out with some jets. I was told by three people from different parts of the city to "take it to Mouse". He's got quite the Reputation!
