Oil Cooler?

Check a computer store. The fans in computers are 12v.

It's not so much the OIL will be destroyed, more important is the oil being used as a MEDIUM to carry heat away from the engine's hot spots, such as the cylinder head.
Just as a point of reference.... Back in the day, I ran Castrol GTX 20-50 for 36,000 miles in my 1980 XS11 before tearing the engine down to install the Wiseco 1196cc Big Bore kit. I also took the lower end apart to replace the primary drive chain. There was NO evidence of sludge or burned oil, I had the Lockhart cooler since brand new. JFWIW

I just about put a big welt on my hand it was soo hot. I did not expect this because it was only about 10min of light traffic maby 50mph. Have you ever accidentaly touched an electric stove? I was able to feel just behind the cooler and there was not very much air flow but it sure was hot. Now I am looking up solutions for a good fan unit that would run from a hidden switch. I don't think I rember anyone mentioning why Yamaha put a factory cooler on in '81. It is still the same engine am I not correct? They must have done this for some reason.

Hobbyman, nice cooler plumbing. I see you're missing the rubbers from the bottom of your spark plug caps..... a very cheap part and if you ever get caught in the rain, you'll be willing to give $20 a peice for them then, lol. Just some cheap, unsolicited advice.

Thanks. I added those 90deg fittings to make it look nicer. I can feel the oil temp as described. THe original lines went out forward and were tied together. They would rub on the back of the fender. UGLY UGLY UGLY . Most of my caps are cracked. That one is missing. Where do you get them?

That looks better too. Next step will be cloth braided or SS. Cloth seems to be my best option because of price and a few other details. The ss lines will get dirty quickly.

My bikes are both older, but I think the horn was supposed to mount in the same location as the oil cooler.
So do I win a free beer??

You are right. I had the horns off because the bracket decided to fracture. I almost lost the horn going down the road. There is a beer in the fridge with your name on it if you want. Its some guy brought it over a while ago so its really old.

Have you been to one of the places where they dispose of old beer? I was at a big landfill which looked like a strip mine. They had a concrete pad which looked like a semi truck loading dock. They had dump trucks empty out unopened beer cases at the lowest point. From there on the bulldoser just smasheld it up against the back wall and all the beer went out a drain. It smelled soo rancid I could not believe that was beer. It smelled like a brewery that had been shut down for 20yrs with all the yeast rotting away. We were droping off a load of trees and old fence panels. We had to drive through the streams of rotten bear running down the road. Reminded me of "Rock Candy Mountain" in Oh Brother Where Art Though

I have a 1979 XS11 standard and have been looking at figuring out a oil cooler for my bike. Are the fittings tapped directly into the oil pump housing in that picture? Also has anyone looked at getting a VW style oil cooler or is it too wide?

When I first moved to California I bought an 69 Bug and it would have overheating problems sitting in LA traffic during the summer. There is nothing like an average speed of 20mph when you are traveling 35 miles. I installed a oil cooler and it solved a lot of those issues (except the traffic itself). One issue that was brought up earlier was about VW engines being air cooled and still lasting. The thing with that is that as long as the engine was running (and you hadn't thrown your alternator belt) there was always a fan blowing on the engine (heads espectially) which helped keep it from overheating (for the most part).

One additional. Of those who have installed a oil cooler has anyone looked into putting a cleanable or membrane replaceable inline oil filter on one othe lines?
