  • 8mm yellow silicone hose

i just had a thought and since i'm going to swap out coils and for anyone wanting to change out the stock wire and can't find solid core yellow accell wire like me, i went everywhere here in los angeles...

i had an apephavy, why don't i just slip some hose over some cheap and very easy to get 7mm black sold core and get the same results, so my question is instead of buying a kit for 26.00 retail or 18.00 ebay i would have way to much left over. 26 feet of varying dia.

does anyone have a few feet of yellow, i'd be glad to make a donation to the site or i could get the bulk and reverse the process, any takers?

    Spray paint...

If you "just gotta have yellow", you could spray paint it, or, you could put yellow shrink tube over it. Why does it have to be yellow? Is there some hidden meaning here?

Or just go order an ACCEL set for any small 4-cyl and use the wires?

      Worked for me.

but we bought accel wires cause the yellow looks cool, don't you know these things?

or do i have to explain? spray paint yeah right, i'm not going to mickey mouse my bike but you can with yours.

              Hey Mason,

Check this out: Ebay # 250094479668

Sorry it's not an active link, Ebay has changed how they display the search results in the URL window, just easier to post the item #.

I bought some GREEN copper core 8mm from this seller a few months ago, if you wait and win the auction, total is about $20.00. I WANTED and got GREEN!!!!! He had several colors available. But I also wanted to use NGK plug caps and I'm putting them on my MikesXS coils! I haven't installed them yet, been busy with other stuff, like undercutting a set of 1,2 4,5th gears for a fellow Xsive in NC!

OH dear ... hate to be brutal but if you want excel coils and wires ... BUY them!!! Using yellow wiring is not excel and that's just the way it is. Using "look alike" is like buying decals to stick on your bike for parts you don't have installed on it. YELLOW plug leads is an excel high performance parts identity color as much as a badge of KerKer of K&N.
Just do it right and you will be a lot happier with the parts and the performance. That's my 2 cents ...

OOPS sorry, didn't read the whole ad. my point was that the solid wires are available for a reasonable price, as TC made clear. BTW, I did use solid core wires on mine, too.

thanks gents and that you are, i plan to use the 7mm stock ngk caps, would the 8mm fit without a prob?

hey 79XS11F, i ordered some h/o coils from mike's yet another fine discovery by topcat, they don't publish the output, i suppose it would be an improvement ovewr stock output, my experience with mikes is there is integrity there, so i will benifit that doubt, all in all i think it's a good compromise for and upgrade at a discount and wire is wire right, better than 29 yr old wire....

8mm wires in 7mm NGK caps, YES!

                      Hey Mason,

I'm working on a Tech Tip for the conversion using the MikesXS coils. I just took my OEM's out, and got to work on the new ones. The 8mm wore is very flexible. It WILL fit into the NGK plug caps, but takes a wee bit o twisting to screw them down into the caps. I marked the wire with black sharpie noting the depth it needed to be screwed into to bottom out into the cap as well as the coil.

There is a thick rubber O-ring that is used to seal the wire into the coil after you thread it onto the screw fitting inside the coil mount. The first one I did I used the full size O-ring, was a bit of a pain screwing the retaining cap tight, with the silicone rubbery action of the wire insulation, it kept wanting to unscrew slightly.

The second coil, I was trying to stretch the O-ring to easier fit it over the wire, TORE IT SO....I took the remaining O-ring, and cut it in half. The securing caps fit easier with the half as long/thick O-ring. I applied clear silicone RTV all around the outside of the mounting caps/wires at the coil to better seal them from water! I also used some of this special COPPER contact grease/sealant that Randy gave out at a Rally to ensure good contacts with the plug wire and the coil and plug caps where they screw onto.

I'll have pictures, and eventually a ride report as well, but Godzilla will be down for a while longer yet, as I attempt the XJ tank conversion, along with some custom painting and such!

The mounting holes are 90 degrees out from the OEM's, and they are slightly longer at the mounting holes. I reamed out the holes on One coil that I'll be mounting using the holes, and turning the coil on it's side...has prominent protrusions where the plug wires fit. This will position the wire mounts in a vertical orientation, one atop the other. The second coil will be mounted with some L brackets, so that the wire mounts will be horizontal. Putting them both horizontal would have caused the mounts to hit each other. I also added a small 1/2" section of shrink wrap to the plug ends of the 1-4 coil so that I could more easily tell which set of wires were for which plugs. The OEMS actually had little bands with 1,2,3,4 on them on each wire!

The coils come with mounting plugs that you can crimp onto the CUT ends of the wires you take off of the old coils, so you can use the same plugs to the harness! I just made sure I noted which coil was connected to which plugs, the grey or the orange, and to which cylinders so that I will get them properly matched up when I put them back in!

will let em screw a little easier and will dry up on it's own in a short time.

                            Hey MRO,

I thought about that, but wasn't sure if the WD-40 would evaporate or not, or leave a residue. I wanted to be able to further seal the connections with clear RTV, didn't want it not being able to stick to the parts?! That's okay, my fingers and thumbs aren't too sore from twisting them!

                              A few preview pics!

                              Hey Mason,

Here are a few pix of my MikesXS coil swap!

This one shows the difference in lengths between OEM and Mikes!

Here is the pair with all the wires, caps installed!

Here's the "L" bracket used to mount the second one with the high tension output leads horizontal.

Here's the right hand unit mounted with output leads vertical.

And here they are installed and routed to plugs!

Regrettably, I can't report on how they run YET, as you can see, carbs/tank off. I'm working on that XJ tank conversion, along with my 3rd luggage bag rack and modified backrest mount!

And, after seeing the photos blown up, I might need to grind down those steering neck welds and redo them afterall!?
