1st gear guru question

I don't have an extra 1st gear to look at right now. Need to know how many teeth are there, possibly diameter too.....

First gear wheel ( 2H7-17211-00-00 ) has 38 teeth. Dunno about diameter though.

So. my next and maybe last question is, If I want to increase the ratio of first gear, would I want that wheel diameter to go larger or smaller in the XS11?

it would be a larger gear

Gears work exactly like levers. A small gear driving a larger one gives an increase in torque, and a decrease in speed, and vise-versa.

According to the Yamaha shop manual the overall 1st. gear ratio in the 850 Special was 10.79 vs 12.07 for the XS Eleven and 5th.

all the older writeups and some people are confusing on gear ratios....OVERALL and individual (1st gear) ratios I believe are getting lost in the translation. I just looked at some specs for a XS750D and the 1st gear ratio stated 13.0....I cannot find a fiche on this model. If i can get ahold of a taller (bigger gear diameter, I will mod it to go in the xs11 tranny(if need be)....

to be clear, the main shaft teeth drive the 1 gear wheel? someone chime in please.....
