First, here's an overview shot of what is inside the shifter cover. Note

The torsion spring returns the shift shaft assembly to a central position....


Here's what it looks like when you are shifting up....

You can see that gravity would help return the shift shaft assembly to the centre position if the spring was broken, but but it would not help when shifting down.

Ken, is that set of pictures in tech tips somewhere? If it's not, it should be. That's about the clearest photographic explanation of a constant mesh transmission shifter as I've seen.

Thanks, Patrick. You're probably right that this should be done up as a proper tech tip to list in the repairs/transmission section. The only reason it hasn't been is the length of my list of 'my projects'. Of course, there's also the length of SWMBO's list of 'my projects'. It will be done.....

Perhaps, for the time being, this thread could be linked from tech tips under a heading like "Shifter- Pictures and discussion."

Just a thought. You could, of course, edit out the discussion about making it a thread. Except that part about how great I think it is.

This post is awesome, it's just what I was looking for. Do you guys use a gasket for the crankcase? I heard that some silicon will do the trick, I just wanted to ask the pros.

I have used paper gasket material for the shift fork cover a couple times and it always leaked on me. I always use RTV for that one now. Many folks tal about "The Right Stuff" being the bomb shnizzle for gasket material.
