              • Cody, I'll take a spacer also. Without going back through this thread, a spacer and the replacement drive is all that is needed, correct?

                  • Wow what a thread!

I can't believe I'm just now reading it, You guys definetly make this a must site for XS/Xj owners, and modifiers.

I have learned, enjoyed, and benefited from this site
Chop and Maximan, and all others that have done this mod, cudos!
You all make it sound very easy and tempting, those lower revs sound very inviting for highway driving and cruising.

I will probably wait, as we have just purchased a new house that we are waiting to move into, and also are working on the one we are vacating for the next occupants.

I look forward to seeing alot of you at the Suches GA. South East rally and see the results of this mod first hand.

After that I think I will know for sure if the mod is a must do for me.

Ride on, and thanks all for all your valuable info on these super bikes!

                      • Hey there Maximan! Somehow I missed the part about you making those spacers for those who want them? Is it true? If so I am interested. My email is:

                          • Did My FD this weekend

My Special now feels like a new and improved bike. With the stock 16 inch wheel it was always geared too low. My old FD had that crappy thin chrome and had just developed a leaky seal this season. So the 750 FD from ebay with swingarm cost me 43.00 shipped to my front door and it looks like new. The mod took me about 2 hours. I found bronze bushings just the right size at the local ACE hardware. Just cut them to length. I noticed close to zero reduction in my 1st gear starts. And now the beast lopes down the highway without sounding like its wound out to the redline. Took it on a 65 mile trip and got around 38 mpg. Of course I was hitting the starts hard trying to see what she felt like now. On my regular commutes I expect to get well over 40 mpg. What a great mod. Just this one tip alone makes this the most useful site for XS owners. Maybe just the way I shift but the reduced freewheeling pressure on the tranny during shifts allows for quieter, less clunky shifting. What I mean is the sweet spot during clutch activation seems to be increased. After driving this beast for 15 years I have been able to make nearly silent shifts, but now it is even easier to make them. This mod has my reccomend if you pull highway miles and have a 16 inch rear.

1990 Harley FXSTS has 8K on it and cost me about a grand in repairs after every road trip.

                            • Fuel milage

As most of you know, I did the FD mod back in Oct or Nov, can't remember exactly, but my milage has increased nicely. Wildkat and I went for a 130 mile ride on Friday. The first 82 miles was all back roads, at about 50 mph. I fueled up at 82 miles, and it only took 2.1 gallons! That's 40 mpg in my book, and I am tickled pink. I have never gotten that kind of milage before, even taking it easy on the throttle. I used to get 29-30 at freeway speeds (70-75 mph), and now I get about 34-35 mpg. I don't think I'll ever switch back to the original FD.

                              • I wonder how much the price of 750/850 Fd goes up because of this. I think I am going to get one now so that I will have one when I am ready.
