    clutch plate change

    I think before long, I'm going to be due to install, and change out the clutch plates. Possibly, new springs, too.

    Am I gonna need a special tool to do this?

      Hey Norton, and Skids,

      That info is in the tech tip on adding an extra Steel plate, you might want to think about doing that while you're in there Norton!

      And impact wrench makes getting that large clutch basket nut off, but you'll still need to wedge the rear wheel when tightening it. You'll need a low scale ft/lb torque wrench, or an inch pound one, the clutch basket spring bolts only needs 7 ft/lbs!

        Hey Norton
        You can also do the clutch change without draining the oil if you have the bike on the side stand.
        don't forget to line up the cogs on the back of the basket before you start retightening everything. I broke my oil pump idler gear 'cos I didn't check. Ouch!

          I can't find the tech tip about the extra steel plate?!

          Had seen something about "an extra steel plate", on another post, here, a while back. Looked for additional information then, and couldn't find it.

              A superb tech tip; pictures, complete explanation, etc.

              Muchly appreciated.

              I had looked under "clutch", "transmission", "modifications"; everything except "engine". ..........................guess it just never dawned on me, that it might be part of the "engine";
              duhhhhhhhhhhhhhh .....................

              Thank you very much, again, for the tech tip, and for your effort(s)

                  Can you still buy OEM clutch plates? And are they expensive?

                    PartsnMore, $5.00 ea, $40 for a set of 8, free shipping! Throw in a set of HD springs while you're at it! A fellow Xsive is selling extra Steel plates, had a couple left , check the Member's Forum. Otherwise, from BikeBandit, about $8.00 ea for Steels!
