    pick up coils

Hope this topic can be dropped in this forum and has not been beat to death, but I am new here and I need to get the scoop ASAP -sorry for all the details.

I have been working on my bike (78 XS11, 8K mi).
the bike had 3k when I got it - with most of that coming over the first three years. The guy I got it from ran some kind of high test gunk cleaner through the bike - it took a while to run that stuff through. After a few sets of plugs things wer going pretty well. Dropped in a new set of plugs, but they eventually fouled off. Another new set it took awhile but they eventually fouled off to.

Currently The carbs have been removed/cleaned up, timing adjusted, tuned, fuse block upgrade, have moved up to a hotter plug from a 6 to 5 - all this being done by someone with a great deal more knowledge than I about XS11. I am learning as we go...

There is a minor hesitation right around 3000 RPM - as soon you crack the throttle and get past that minor hesitation she takes off like a rocket. after putting the new plugs in -ran about 25 mi - the two outside cyl plugs are burning a little dark. We Swapped them out with the center cyl and they burn clean - same problem with the outside cyl. After runnig ohm checks on the rest of the wiring it looks like the pick up coils are the problem- specifically the fine wire.

would ya agree? should I be looking at anything else? The pick up coil wires have not been spliced ( repir tips), but my buddy thinks you could just soldier them directly.

    thanx

    hi MtTremperman

If you found an open/short in one wire, I'd double check the others. Will cause poor running for sure.

Would also check for vac leak. Hoses/boots/caps etc..

there was a open - right or wrong it got soldiered - the meter says its fine, but the slicing wire technique sounds appealing if it proven fix. what type of resistance should it be showing?

The vac looks solid - everything else has been checked as best we can. this is all per Bob the retired Yamaha mechanic I ran into on the streets - I am on information overload right now as this is the first time I have really gotten into it with this bike.

the bike is pretty clean - came with a aftermarket exhaust and seat. I was promptly rear ended by a car -dented the fender - hit and run. The bars are a little bent, but she is oil tight & everything works - i will get piture

After a painful learning process with the pick up coils on my 78E, including a new set, I have leaned a couple of things. A quick and easy check to see if you do have a problem is to start the bike with the engine at idle and the cover to the coils removed. Move the pick up coil assembley gently counter clockwise. If you have a wire going bad the bike will start to stumble or even die. The wires can check out perfectly fine when the bike is not running , but need the movement of the coils to show if they are bad.
I just had an episode with the "new" set I put on, but with advice from TC I've think I got a handle on it. Good luck!!

          danimal,

The coils should show between 600 and 800 ohms each.
