Tad, that is what I will do. The only thing that worries me is how bad it smoked, but I am hoping, before I bent the valves, that all that was wrong were some stuck rings.

Underdog, From what I understand the '82 XJ1100 head will work, but others here will probably confirm if that's true. I don't know if the YICS makes any difference or not.

I have all the cams and other parts on mine now, All I need is the head with the valves in it. I may actually only need the valves to redo my head, but it's cheaper just to buy a used head w/ the valves already in it.

I have been reading about the variations of cam/head that can be made and would be interested in using the 78/79 cams on an 80-82 head, for the performance, but then I would need the older cam set.
Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

.. it could have been smoking if the valve seals are bad, but mostly on decelaration or it could have been as easy as having to much oil in the crank case or gas/oil, these would be seen as white smoke. it could also be smokin if the vacuum diaphram in your fuel valve is leaking and getting sucked striaght into your manifold, this would look like black smoke. not dis'in your diagnosis, just throwin out some other causes.
.. the 82 XJ head will work but you will have to do something with the YICS ports, i dont know what, i have not tried this before.
PM Trbig, he has done this to his bike, he would be happy to help.

It was blowing smoke mostly on acceleration, kindo f brownish at idle to start, but very blue as it went along. . never got it goig fast enough to have to decelarate hard. I got a whole 2.3K. It slowly lost power as it couldn't burn the oil out fast enough. Once I pulled it over it stopped and wouldn't start. Once we got it home and put a charger on it, it started right up again. The plugs were pretty badly fouled, cleaned them up, and around now is when the valves got screwed up.
Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

Apparently the YICS has nothing to do with the head itself, so that one off the XJ1100 should work fine.

Well, I can certainly use the head. I need to borrow a chainbreaker tool and take the top end off to find out what else I may need down below.

I am used to cars, where if the bore is worn we just bore it out and put in oversize pistons and rings. I assume that when they talk about 1st over, 2nd over rings, they are just changing the rings?

Was reading on the 'Big Bore' kits as well, where you get oversize pistons, head gasket, etc. I assume that the stock barrels can be bored out that far?

"Put that in yer pipe and smoke it!"

Bought an "E" last January. Trailered it to the shop, got it to run briefly(knowing it would need further work), shut it down and forgot about it. (Dumped a concoction of oils in the plugholes to loosen the rings a bit just in case... sat fer 6 years)
So here it is, eight months later, and I'm trying to get it road worthy. Cleaned and redid everything that is doable. Fired it up... starts to smoke!
                          "What the hey, Gomer?"
No problem, plenty of time... dumped some stuff down the plug holes and let it sit fer a day.
Put a fan blowin' on the engine and ran the hell out of it. Smoked like an old Marlborough.
                          "Bah! Deal with it later.
Next day, had a little puddle of crud under the bike, where the muffler meets the header pipe.
"Well duh!" All the stuff I'd poured into the cylinders over the months had to go somewhere. Engine doesn't smoke at all... hot exhaust is just burning all the oil coatin' the pipes! And since the headers dip below the frame, and then swoop up to drip from the the muffler joint, I've probably got a nice little puddle of stuff that I'll have to remove the pipes to pour out.
Common sense would have told me that, but late at night, I get a little loopy.
"Damn it Jim, I'm a doctor, not a mechanic!' ('Bones' McCoy)

It's that immediate sense of 'panic'. Throws all common sense out the window. It's the same reflex that, once the kid has hit the starter and the motor tunred 1/4 turn before it stopped, makes you KEEP hitting the starter cause you can't figure out why the motor just 'seized'!

"it can't be seized, it turned over a minute ago...."

Just waiting for the cylinder head and related stuff to arrive. Picked up a used set of 4 into 2 pipes.

Ordered a Cam chain, and a gasket set as well as a Manual.

Unfortunately, it's SNOWING here today! Couple of inches already.

Noticed that the breather on the rear diff is not right. It looks like a conical rubber thingy with a sheet metal screw in the end? Are these hard to replace?
