    Most i have ever spent on a bike was $2800 for a 1985 Shadow 1100 in 1988. I never had to spend another nickel on it, other than maintenance.

    Most my bikes have been $300-$500 and I spend maybe another couple hundred fixing them up.

    This XS I paid $500 for it, knowing it was going to need a few hundred in cosmetics. Wrecking the engine was a bonus.

        So the actual head, 78, 79, 80 and 81 will all work?

        I found a 1978 Head loacally, if it will work.

          From what MRO wrote 78/79 are the same head ...and interchange with 80/81 also .

            Main difference in heads:

            78/9 have different cams and slightly smaller valves than 80/1

              Hey CrazCnuk,

              The 78-79 series has smaller valves, the 80-81 and 82XJ has the larger valves. The pistons fiche numbers are different between the 2 series, assuming that Yamaha may have made slightly larger depressions in the tops of the pistons for the larger valves, but we know that someone was able to put an XJ head onto a 79 engine with no ill effects once it was torqued properly!!

              So...you can put any XS head onto any XS cylinder, but there will be differences in the valve sizes.

              Partsnmore has complete gasket sets for about $79.00 IIRC, the valve seals run $8.00 ea from Yamaha alone, the head gasket is another $75.00+, so it's a good value!

                Would there be a performance loss putting the '78 head onto the '80 engine, or anything else to look for?

                Is it desirable to keep the cams that are matched to a head, or can they be interchanged?

                I would prefer to find an '80 or '81 head, but can't be choosy sometimes.

                As for design differences, I know some had the cams actually running in between the valve cover and head, whereas on mine the cams end inside (cams are shorter).

                  Performance?

                  78/9 stock has 9.2 to one compression
                  80/1 stock has 9.0 to one compression

                  slight difference on top of piston I believe accounts for this.
                  Same rods/crank in both engines, heads appear only difference to be valves/cams. Cams on 80/1 longer duration?

                  Maybe a performance loss putting early head on later engine,,,, but don't think you will be able to tell without a dino......

                    .. i want to know just what can a cartoon dinosaur tell you about the performance of your bike? and if he is good, where can i get one?

                    .. if you get the older head, then get the older cams to go with them. putting the early head on your bike will be fine but you will need the early cams to go with it.
                    but if you get a newer head, get the older cams anyway, cause the older cams in the newer head will give you a killer top end[will make your bike real fast].
                    newer cams in the older head, will make your gas milage better but will make your bike way slower.

                          I'm watching this one and a few others.

                          I found a 78/79 head here but they want $300 for it, used from a wrecker.

                          I am intrigued y the 'better fuel mileage' claim of using the newer cams on the older head.

                          Since the XS 1100 produces more power/speed than I will ever need, mileage sounds good, especiall at over $1.10/litre.

                            Hey craznuk, I agree with pggg. Pull the head and concentrate on only the head.

                            Chances are the rest is OK so just give the cylinder walls a quick glance to look for excessive wear or evidence of a broken ring. If you see that, then stop there. If not, then....concentrate on the head work!

                            Just get it running and give her a tune up and experience the machine. I guarantee you will keep coming back for more when you feel the power and the torque! Aint nothin like it!

                              82 XJ Head

                              Hi Crazcnuk ,

                              I have a 1982 Maxim XJ1100 for parts .
                              Only has 14,000 miles on it ..according to the odometer ??
                              Pm me if interested , not sure of the differances , but it should work ..
                              Are you looking for a head with cams etc ??This bike has not been stripped (yet).
