Hey Chop,
According to my micrometer, it's about 17.75mm diameter which should make it an 18mm. It has a 1.5mm thread pitch.
I have some 20mm x 1.5mmpitch threaded rod, and it's about 19.75mm diam!
The castle nut for it is the same as for the XS650:
650 90171-18008-00 NUT, CASTLE (256-25382-00)
XS11 90171-18008-00 NUT, CASTLE (256-25382-00)
Hope this helps!

Hey Chop,
I took my 1.5mm pitch threaded rod and held it next to the spare axle I had, and the threads meshed perfectly! I know my threaded rod is 1.5mm, it's the same pitch as the oil filter bolt, I had to determine that in finding suitable threaded rod to make the supply tubes for my S.O.F.A.s, so I'm very sure that the axle is the exact same pitch.
