  • which breaks more often clutch or throttle cable?

hello , i just change my clutch cable as a safety measure and the old one was stretched and felt gummed up even though i lubed it previously.

flanders, $15.10, anyways it pulls great and shifts fast as heck, i didn't know that the cable had so much to do with the shifting experience...glad i did it

i would like to do the same with the throttle cable, my question is if anyone would help is do they construct the cables to render the same cycles before failure?

as the throttle has much less tension to go against than the clutch pack, should i just inspect and not bother with the change any comments would be apprieciated

I'd just remove the carb end of the throttle cable and see how freely it travels. It should be really easy to move then. If the ends check out (no frays or anything) then lube 'er up and ride!

Never hurts to have a spare though.

I have yet to replace a cable on my 80g pushing 65k. I bought a cable luber years ago when I was into desert racing. Its a nifty device that clamps to the end of the cable and you can shoot a lube thru it. As a normal matter of maintenance, I will use it about every 3-4 months. You can also shoot carb or brake cleaner thru it to clean the cable out and then lube it. As a side note, my old Norton had a giant appetite for clutch cables, I always kept one taped to the existing one, could change that thing out in about 5 minutes. Dam thing always seemed to break at an interesection.

I have had to replace 3-4 clutch cables to only one throttle cable in the 14 years of riding my bike. It seems the clutch cale has some ware from the clutch perch, because that is where mine has always broken. The throttle cable was changed as a preventitive measure last year when I rebuilt the bike after the accident, so I have never had one break.

you think lathering that perch area with grease would help?

I don't know about grease, but I have used WD 40 and PBlaster on that area.
Maybe some dry graphite lube would work well.
