  • Help - broken throttle cable 300 miles from home :(

    Hey All,

Does anyone know where I can get a replacement throttle cable for an 1980 XS1100LG in Los Angeles?

Well, it pays to listen to that inner voice... I have a new one at home in Oakland, CA - but that won't help me in L.A. Alas.

I am supposed to be back to work on Wednesday and the soonest the nearest Yamaha dealer said they could get one delivered by is Tuesday morning. Now, while a quick tank lift, and throttle cable replacement plus a jaunt up the I-5 might sound like a fun way to spend a Tuesday day, afternoon and evening... I am still barely able to ride. Fortunately the throttle snapped just below the pivot point inside the handle and I am able to wrap the throttle cable arm (the L shaped fitting which guyides the cable into the handle) around my palm and goose the cable to give throttle, but it's not exactly ...ideal.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. In fact, if anyone has one I'd be happy to paypal you or send you a check or money order if you could overnight it to me.

    Thanks!!!
    -Patrick Kennedy

Just a thought but there has got to be some motorcycle graveyards around. Have you tried some of the salvage yards. Might just be the fastest way to get a cable. If you do just make sure you give an ample does of lubricant.

Hi, thanks so much for the quick response. I might just take you up on your offer! Everyone is closed right now or can't get the part 'til tuesday.

        XS1100F
        2H7-26311-01-00 WIRE, THROTTLE (91 OMM)

        XS1100LG
        3H3-26311-00-00 CABLE, THROTTLE 1

The part numbers are close enough that I sure would be willing to give it a try. How far are you from Culver City?

        thanks again!

I know that some shops will make them up for you...

What Skids said! Bring your old cable and bits to a good shop ( best bet might be an independant shop), and have them quickly build one fer yea. They usually have spools of cable... and just solder your ends and stuff to it.

If the shops are closed it won't matter as it's only 300 miles to ride. I tie string to the cable and run it to my throttle hand at the bars.

Mine snapped away from home on the XJ. It had broke in the twistgrip. I cut back the outer cable about an inch, then crimped part of the cut-oof bit to the inner with a pair of pliers and jammed it in the twistgrip hole. Got me home no problem.
