    How about some cam timing?

    I liked the thread by 81xsProject about his 79 cams in the 80 XS. My question is this. Has anyone tried tinkering around with cam timing to place the torque/power curve in your most favorite riding range?

    I understand that moving the intake and exhaust cams in relation to each other will have an effect but I am not sure what that would be.

    Also, does anyone know if a set of cam sprokets are made with slotted holes that will work on the XS?

    Once you un-can a can of worms, the only way to re-can them is with a bigger can.

    Read the last few post of this thread:

    Dyno results hot off the press!

    It shows a dyno run after my cams were dialed up. It pushed the torque curve down into the 3000-6000 range.

    Their are no available pre-slotted sprockets. My dealer slotted the stock sprockets with his mill and dialed them in for me. It worked.

      I am considering slotting a set of cam gears. Should I be concerned about the cam gear slipping?

        Maximan, thanks for the link. Very interesting and it has my thirst for tinkering rising. I think I am going to have to try it out but I dont have access to a dyno. Guess I will have to use the seat of the pants method (fun fun fun).

        Denny, A couple of my friends dragrace bikes and they use slotted cam sprokets without any worry about movement. But then, thats only 1/4 mile at a time. Still, I do not think there would be any 'unplanned' cam adjustment with slotted sprokets. but I suspect that checking cam timing would become a routine maintenance item.

          Thanks TADracer for the info. I will proceed with the cam slotting. I a m concerned about slipping, I could always whip an insert to put in the slot.

          The cam sprockets are made of some tough stuff, milling slot will be interesting. To date, I have only milled aluminum.

          Once I get the program setup, send me your sprockets!

            You can also drill the hole oversize and use an eccentric bushing.
