I found my formual for best fuel economy is high ambient temp (85deg. F) and speed under 65mph.
so you say hot/ lean is more economical, but how duzit run?

Naturally it runs better on rich/cool air. Speed and economy have always been at opposite ends of the spectrum. Particularly with an air cooled engine.

i finally got better mileage. i took it out on the road today, rode 30 miles and stopped to fill before i headed home. about 28 mpg, that is running at 60-65mph into a 30-40mph headwind. i think the motor turned about 4000 rpm the whole way up. still is better than 15mpg which is what my pickup gets!!!

When you feel like you are doing 90MPH as far as wind resistance goes, and your speedo only says 70MPH, you are riding into a 20MPH headwind. A headwind is a wind blowing directly into your face and will kill gas mileage and make riding much more difficult at speeds of 60 or above, particularly if it's blowing at 30MPH or more. Look at flags, smoke or trees to see which way the wind is blowing, or when you slow down or stop for a light it will be evident. Headwind=bad Tailwind=good
