A kick start lever will only work if your starter is bad (or you just want to kick start it). If your battery is dead or low (under about 10 volts) pushing or kicking won't work. The coils need at least 10 volts to fire so jump start is your only option in that case.
Yes, kick start lever from the 3-cylinder XSs will work.

I'm pretty sure I saw a post from IIRC 650MIke, that said he had a 650 lever on his 1100, cause it folds up a bit out of the way, I think he said he did some minor mod to keep it from hitting the side cover or such, but it will fit the splines!

There are two styles of 650 kick starter levers, straight and curved, and MikesXS sells the "rubbers" for each, but not the actual levers!

I bought a 650 kicker lever off eBay and it hit the case. It wasn't very useful for starting the engine either so I never bothered trying to fix the problem.

I don't think the engineers that designed the XS11 ever meant for it to be kick started.

Adding to my earlier post about kick starting XS1100.
I have used the kick starter on my E just to see how hard it is. It was quite easy being a 4 cylinder. My XL250 Honda would bite sometimes if you were on the wrong part of the cycle. It would occasionally kick back into your shin.
