Good day,
I am new to this forum/website. I recently decided to do some work on my bike since it has sat for a couple years (moved into a new house full of other projects).
I’m sure there are lots of things to do, check, repair etc and I’m just getting started. I’ve read quite a few posts here, but I’m still unclear on what model I have. I thought I read somewhere that “Maxim” means XJ. It is a 1982, It has Maxim sideplates but who knows if they were replaced. The ownership says XS1 under the model, but again this could be wrong. The VIN number is 11G000351. It is black and the ownership says MRN for colour which I assume is maroon…which tells me things may have been changed.
I have a Clymer XS1100 manual but it probably doesn’t cover my model. I plan on cleaning the carbs and doing the float check, checking brakes, replacing the battery (dead), and going through all the routine maintenance suggested to bring it back to it’s glory. I have a pretty good workshop, compressed air, and the newest toy donated by my grandfather…a box style sandblaster. When I last rode the bike I found it probably ran a little rich since it went through a lot of gas and under high speed acceleration would puff out some black smoke. I’m hoping that some carb work will help alleviate this problem, but I also fear that I could screw things up worse.
I checked the thread from the search “serial number model identification” but didn’t seem to help.
The gage cluster/console has maxim 1100 on it too.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
James
