  • model identification

    Good day,

I am new to this forum/website. I recently decided to do some work on my bike since it has sat for a couple years (moved into a new house full of other projects).
I’m sure there are lots of things to do, check, repair etc and I’m just getting started. I’ve read quite a few posts here, but I’m still unclear on what model I have. I thought I read somewhere that “Maxim” means XJ. It is a 1982, It has Maxim sideplates but who knows if they were replaced. The ownership says XS1 under the model, but again this could be wrong. The VIN number is 11G000351. It is black and the ownership says MRN for colour which I assume is maroon…which tells me things may have been changed.
I have a Clymer XS1100 manual but it probably doesn’t cover my model. I plan on cleaning the carbs and doing the float check, checking brakes, replacing the battery (dead), and going through all the routine maintenance suggested to bring it back to it’s glory. I have a pretty good workshop, compressed air, and the newest toy donated by my grandfather…a box style sandblaster. When I last rode the bike I found it probably ran a little rich since it went through a lot of gas and under high speed acceleration would puff out some black smoke. I’m hoping that some carb work will help alleviate this problem, but I also fear that I could screw things up worse.
I checked the thread from the search “serial number model identification” but didn’t seem to help.
The gage cluster/console has maxim 1100 on it too.
    Any ideas?

    Thanks,
    James

The XJ 1100 was only offered in the US for one year-82. I understand that it was sold in Canada for three years. The 82 model serial number started with a 10M number. Your 11G would almost indicate an 83 model. You will need to talk with some of the other Canadian XJ owners to get more detailed information. The XJ did have the name of Maxim, and the XS's did not have a model name.

11G means it is a 1982 XJ1100 Maxim made for the Canadian market, they did them in 'New Ruby Red' and 'New Yamaha Black'.

The serial numbers for '82 started at 101 so yours is, at most, the 250th bike that year. I say 'at most' cos some of the serial numbers weren't used.

Nice bike, look after it !

I am also new to this forum and have recently purchased a Yamaha 1100. It was a seriously neglected bike- several years storage outside including Canadian winters and this past year had a large pine tree fall on it. There is no ownership with it so I need as much identification info as I can get. Above the ignition it says 1100, on the side covers it says Maxim, the number on the neck is 11G010198, and it is dark blue in colour. Anyone have year model etc. Sounds like it may be 83.

        thanks

The Maxim (also know as the XJ1100J or just XJ here in the states) is clearly distinguishable from the XS11 series by the instrument cluster. If you have an LCD display between the tach and speedo it is an XJ. This particular part is not interchangeable between the XS and XJ due to wiring differences on the XJ, so the possibility it is an XS with swapped-on parts is microscopic.

There are several other quite visible differences between the models. The XJ has square handlebars, XS models had round handlebars. The XJ valve cover and right-side engine cover (actually the alternator cover) will have "YICS" cast into them; this stands for Yamaha Induction Control System which was introduced on the '82 models. No XS had the YICS system. Since the alternator was changed in the XJ series to a brush design, the covers are not interchangeable and so are a good indication of which model you have.

You need any more help, just ask!

            Greg,

11G-010198 tells us it's a 1983 'K' model XJ1100 sold into Canada, originally in Sparkle Red.

The serials for that year started with 010101 so yours is the 97th one made that year.

everything I have read on this site pointed in that direction I just wasn't sure about the Blue paint.

                  OKoldschool,
You have a 1979SF, or a special. Check that the engine number matches the frame, as they could have been changed out.
